Just spoke about this with my daughter. Here's an update!
The police have been called. Child Protective Services have been called.
He did not do this video in the 'heat of the moment'. He planned this out.
She paid for that laptop herself. The software he installed was for school.
He comes up with additional chores for her to do since she gets through those chores we heard about 'too quickly' to the point where she really does have trouble finishing her homework.
Her parents are divorced, no surprise there IMO.
HE IS AN ABUSER. He said he 'allowed' her to talk to CPS.
(He found the girl's diatribe by SNOOPING on her laptop for it. The dog has a FB page which she hadn't excluded from her own.)
The police couldn't do anything.
There has been no word yet on the CPS investigation.
If this is true- and yes; I actually hope this is some staged joke :)- then I'm very sorry but this dad is pathetic. Sure a teen can be a pain. But his response... I'd even call it childish; "if you post bad things about me, I'll do the samesies to you". Him being the adult, he should have handled this way better. It speaks volumes of how he is unable to communicate with his daughter.
Through my eyes; his attempt to set a "good example" for his daughter fails even more by him smoking a cigarette during. Ok, I'll be gentle and give him a tiny plus for being outside. Still, there's a time and a place for everything and a bottle of whiskey in his hand would have completed the deal :p All this being almost laughably hilarious, there's a thing that got me the shivers; pulling out a gun and putting bullets in that laptop. To me; that is a sign of someone unable to display his dismay and anger in a proper way. A rather violent way, may I say. It's something that shocks me far more than a few bad words coming from the mouth (or: hands ;)) of a teenage-girl, who seems able to formulate her complaints in a rather clear way below that inappropriate surface.
I wouldn't be surprised that if such a video had showed up from a Dutch dad, the daughter would have a good chance of getting help from youth care & protection services, should she chose to ask for it. And since I don't think shooting laptops is implied in any weaponlicense over here  a Dutch dad would have risked losing his permit and gun by posting such a ridiculous video.
For those unfamiliar with my country, I should probably tell that guns are very much a rarity here. The only real gun most of us ever get to see, is locked on the belt of a policeman. Licenses are restricted to a certain use, often only in permitted area's or while performing certain functions. Those active in military and police-force are permitted -and restricted- carrying and usage of weapons by specific laws. Of 16,5 million people, only 70.000 have a license, adding about 50.000 policemen and 80.000 active in the military, that's about 1% of the entire population. Perhaps an illegal weapon here and there, but you get the picture. And though not illegal once with permit, many chose to store their weapon at the job, instead of at home. To keep our homes safe.
I saw that video and that bastard reminded me of my dad. And to make matters worse, my current stepmom was one of the ones applauding him. And she's usually one of the nicest people you'd ever hope to meet.
Damn am I glad I no longer live with them... Hannah has my support.
The funny thing about that video is that the guy thought he was so badass for posting that video but when the police and the media came rolling through, he was quick to go running back to the confines of his own home.
Although Hannah won't probably forgive her father, I have the feeling he's going to be a lot nicer to her since he's now on the police's and child service's radar.
Thanx for that update, EEK. O my, that's even worse than I thought! I was actually still hoping someone would pop up like a jack in a box to yell "joke!". I sure do hope someone can help this girl.
And g-dubz, I completely agree that things get scary when other people start applauding these types of actions from parents. I hope that the word this man is an abuser will get to them as well! I believe talking with children is just about the main parenting skill, right after listening to them.
Since it has gone viral, everyone now knows and that's half the battle against abuse. So often the victims think they're alone or that no one cares.
Hannah knows she's got people looking out for her.
But what do you think is worse? The fact that the father abuses and excludes his daughter from the outside world? Or all of the comments on youtube saying that all of the father's actions were justified?
Nothing to choose between them but I'd venture to say that the comments are based on LESS information than I've had access to via my more social daughter.
Ok, but even with the lack of information, the fact that so many people are applauding a parent for making an immature rant and then shooting his daughter's laptop in order to punish her instead of sitting down and talking about her actions like most parents do is both distressing and disturbing to me.
Like you said there were/are better ways to deal with teens and that wasn't it.
We shall have to disagree about keeping homes safe by excluding guns from them, RR.
Other than that, I agree that this father's response to his daughter was childish and inappropriate for anyone calling themselves an adult.
Esp since the result of his action was to further exclude his daughter from the wider world and thus limit the range of her perspective. Exposure to those worse off than herself would benefit her. But, sadly, this stupid man decided otherwise. Now she'll be immersed in her misery, as she sees it.
I do hope she forgives him enough to pick a nice nursing home for him later on.
I know why she posted that on her FB page - she can't talk to her parents. Her little diatribe is typical of a 15 yr old girl and is not meant to be taken except with a grain of salt. Yes, she has issues w her parents, but then who didn't at that age? However, there are better ways of dealing with this than 'going public'.
I entirely agree with her about getting coffee.
I wonder if it was even real, or just a staged publicity grab.
I cant believe he shot the laptop!! He could have kept it and sold it if nothing else.
REMEMBER she bought that laptop with her own money - it was NOT HIS to do anything with. If he wants 'respect' from his daughter then he'd do better so show her some - first!
I completely agree with EEK.The dad was a jerk, shooting the laptop. What, did he think it was going to jump up and shoot him first.
