The invention of vibrators for female hysteria - The movie!
In response to another thread I came across this today. There is a major movie with some quality actors based on the invention of the vibrator to treat female hysteria.

I never thought Hollywood would make a romantic comedy around the history of female hysteria. It does look like it is worth watching.

They have...and male ailments, also
If any of you want to watch a really good comedy about life in the Guilded Age, rent "The Road to Wellville". In short, it is the story of Kellogg of breakfast cereal fame and his sanatorium. It is a fun movie that unfortunately only lasted a week or so when it was in the theaters a few years ago.

W.K. Kellogg, the doctor of corn flake fame, who developed same as a health food for his sanitarium, published a sex book in the 1880s. I recall one picture of a middle aged spastic man labelled, "The result of conception while the father was intoxicated." That same book identified some women as victims of "sexual spasms" during intercourse. The remedy was to fight these spasms off as they were dangerous to the woman's mental health. No enjoyment for the fair sex should be tolerated during sex!

"In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play)" by Sarah Ruhl (2009) also deals with the early medical use of the vibrator. In it, Catherine, a doctor's wife finds release through the vibrator but realizes that she must ultimately bring that artificial passion into truly passionate relations with her husband.
