Vending machines are also not chained up, yet nobody ever steals them. Also there are no such things as custodians in schools, the children and teachers have to clean it up. And extra-curricular activities are mandatory...their school day is like 7 am to 5 pm
 .

The two first points you just made are just a few of the reasons that I admire the Japanese culture; the sense of responsibility is much greater than in many areas of the Western world. Not sure how I'd feel about the extra-curricular activities (is that a country-wide mandate, or left up to local districts, do you know?) given the pressure on students to maintain high grades, but I'm sure there're reasons behind it.
ETA (as you appear to have beaten me to posting by a minute) I'm not sure what you're asking; I'd be glad to clarify if you can be a bit more specific about what it is I should clarify!

Basically, what did you enjoy about the whole concept. What are some
of the original ideas/thoughts of that methodology?
