The two first points you just made are just a few of the reasons that I admire the Japanese culture; the sense of responsibility is much greater than in many areas of the Western world. Not sure how I'd feel about the extra-curricular activities (is that a country-wide mandate, or left up to local districts, do you know?) given the pressure on students to maintain high grades, but I'm sure there're reasons behind it.
