I've always loved this tune by JC...very poignant, one thought I take from it, is no matter how far you go away or run, it seems the problems follow you, at that point you have to look at yourself and understand that it might be you that is the problem and not a bunch of problems following you!

From what I get from it is this...wealth & power have a way of blinding us to what's really important, you tend to forget the people who were with you when you had nothing. Then, when death is at your door and your life is almost over, you see that all the possessions in the world won't make you happy. You just wish you could have someone, a friend or family member to be at your side to let you know at least someone will care when you're gone.
I don't know if that was the writer's intent, just my interpretation.
