Is that seriously an area one can surf with all the rocks? I love the views, when people talk about Half Moon Bay that's what I envision.

It is extremely dangerous and the water is COLD........when the north pacific
storms roll down from the north they slam the CA coast in that area that is
what they call the Mavericks (the surf).........you have to paddle a long way
to get past the rocks to the break......FUNINTHESUN knows a good bit about
it...........I am an amateur at best.

It looks so pretty & so serene. I would not have thought the area to be dangerous.

It's pretty and sirene as long as you're not in the water.......

The rocks are an issue...but you just have to know exactly where every rock is and get off the wave well before you run in to it(or before you get near the current that takes you towards them). The main reason it takes so long(45min-1hr) to surf that area is because you have to swim around all of the rocks and currents so you don't get slammed in to them. It's NorCal so they don't move unlike SoCal sandbars. I'll surf as long as there aren't any seals. If I see a seal....I'm sharkbait and get out of there.

I much prefer La Jolla and Black's Beach(non locals refer to it as Torrey Pines, also the location of the US Open this year for you golf fans).

That's one nasty wipeout for a few of those who weren't fast enough to get over the top or duck under.

Love picture on you tube! Makes me want to take off and head for the ocean! I can imagine not much fun with sharks, etc. But it must be awesome! Do you ski or snowboard, in the extreme sense?

I really enjoy skiing and snowboarding, but have never had the time to go very often to do those types of things at a high level other than being a silly novice who's too arrogant as a good surfer and skater to know better than to attempt to go off jumps and down high speed moguls within the first two days ever in snow. I love Tahoe.

One time in college I did take the wheels of my skateboard and duct taped the board to my feet and attempted to skate down a very steep popular sledding hill. That was pretty scary as I quickly discovered that since there isn't a sharp edge to a skateboard...there's no way to slow down....

"Extreme" is a pretty relative term, as I consider myself to be a safe and responsible surfer compared to the dudes who take on Half Moon Bay at 60ft or 15ft South African surf with 100 sharks clearly visible around them. Then again, many people have pointed out to me that I'm crazy surfing Black's, especially given the fact that some of us occasionally take this route loaded with backpacks and long boards.

It's about 2 feet wide at some points with a 300ft drop in each direction, heh.

Oohhh, I found a cool site that blogs about that video I posted. Just hit ctrl-f and type in Black's to skip to the section.

At least you use your mind! Try the skiing/snowboarding! I have to laugh at the skateboard duct taped to your feet! I loved those things and find it fun for the winters here. Have to admit though the shark infested waters are not for me...nor is hitting my head on the rocks! But all else is much fun!

If you haven't tried.....go surfing!! If you like the Ritz at Half Moon Bay you'd probably love La Jolla and the beaches have the softest sand in the US and no rocks or sharks! It's easy to learn, and the best way(quality and cost) is through the University unless you know someone who's willing to teach you.

Many, many years ago used to go in NJ. Have thought of it since I want to go somewhere warm soon & give it a try. I went back to skiing, roller blading (used to be rollerskating), and hiking. Miss doing much of what I took up long ago for fun!
