You know, I heard about this awful thing they do in Africa and certain parts of the Middle East: When a girl comes of age, they cut off her clitoris. And I thought, what a great country I live in, because this would never happen in America...because men here can't find the clitioris!!

actually i would have to disagree. they DO cut off girls' clitoris's and it is a very sick thing to do. america isnt all fun and games sweetie, especially with the president we have now.

Erm, where in America (or any other medically advanced first world nation, for that matter) is female circumcision routinely practiced?

i saw a special on it on tv one time....a couple days ago...they actually showed it. gross! but um.....i'd have to watch it again to tell u where......it was really sick so i didnt watch all of it.

Unfortunately, it's true. There are completely misguided areas of the world where "religious authorities" amputate the clitorises of young girls, typically around when they are eight or so. As you might imagine from a tribal surgical procedure, the conditions are horrific (as if the operation itself wasn't already), and frequently performed with instruments that would be more at home in the hands of a neanderthal hunter: sharpened rocks, shards of poorly sharpened glass, and occasionally an actual scalpel that was probably manufactured when Britain still ran India. They then additionally sew up the outer vaginal lips, leaving only a small hole for urine and menstral blood to pass through. This is done to make them good wives for the pathetic excuses for men they will eventually be forced to marry. It is something they have done for hundreds of years, and cannot fathom why they should stop something that they've always done. Indeed, they don't posess the reasoning skills to ask why they are even doing such a disgusting act in the first place. It all comes down to what is known as "The Three Rules of the Fool". They are: 1 - "I thought...", 2 - "They said...", and 3 - "...but, we've always done it that way!". Whenever you ask a fool a question, they will ALWAYS begin their response with one of these three phrases. Note that rule number three is applicable here.

This demonstrates the need for education clearly: 1) why is should not be performed & 2) if the ritual remains then proper surgical technique & sterility has to be followed.
