How long to wait...

I have known this guy for 12 years and over the years I haven't stop ever thinking about him. Now 12 years later we have reconnected. He has gotten out of a 2 year relationship where he has tried everything to make up with her (it's been 5 months). During our conversations within the last month I asked him if he liked me as in a gf. He said yes! He also said that he's not ready for a relationship right now. I have told him that if there is a chance of us being together I would love to give it time, go slow and if being better friends first and building from there I'm all for it. He doesn't have any kids but I have a 6 yr old. Now we talk on the phone just about everyday, we talk for about 2 hours each time. Now recently we have started moving on to sex talk over the phone. We are both comfortable, he then asked me if I would sleep with him? Now I'm a little scepted about it cuz I don't want to be the girl who's there when he wants to have sex.

As adults I'm wondering if we should just have safe sex and enjoy or could this be the beginning of a new relationship for us
