Try this:
Instead of YOU:What's up' HER: Nothing much ask YOU:What do you think of (latest popular show watched by teens or some such teen topic of interest) HER: I think ...... why this method? 1. people are comfortable talking about themselves and their opinions. 2. you are learning about her opinions and interests to see if they are similar to yours. 3. this leads to more answers to questions that don't stall with the reply of nothing much or yes and no. What do you have in common with her? Classes, music, tv shows, teachers Start with those things. Take cues from her and your location. Is she reading something? Comment about what she is reading or ask questions about it. Is she waiting for someone? Talk about waiting. Are you in the office? "Hi, why are you here?" "I'm here to talk about my classes next year with the counselor." "Oh, really, what classes do you want to take..." Are you in the cafeteria? talk about the menu served, offer her a coke or talk about any cafeteria related topics that are current in the student body. after the conversation. It was nice talking to you, "her name". IF she smiles and shows that she enjoyed it too then the next time will be easier for you won't it?
