Hi, my girlfriend and I are talking about starting to have sex. She wants to take the shot cuz she doesnt want the pills laying around her house or anything. Since the shot is 99.9% effective, do we still need to use a condom? Is it still necessary, she kinda wants to as to be sure? will is decrease it at all or just turn the 99.9 into 100? is it necessary at all? please let me know cuz we are planning on going to planned parenthood soon. thanks ~B

bottom line: you don't want to get pregnant do you?
Wear it, it decreases the chances by a lot, and birth control is not 100% effective, even if she took it every day at the same exact time. Hormones are bad that way, they are affected by way to much, stress, antibiotics etc... I know to many girls who got preganant... and some used both. So take your precuations seriously, or you'll be in for a nasty surprise.
Have you decided what your course of action is going to be in the event of a little surprise? You have you have got to be prepared for the worst, even if it seems unimaginable. Good luck!
Lets not forget that the pill or the shot dont protect against STDs...

There are reasons for failure of hormonal methods (Incidentally, condoms are a form of birth control). Generally, if pregnancy would be a big enough issue that you use condoms with the shot, maybe you should be considering other activities than vaginal sex.

You're really fine with just birth control. But if you absolutely do not want to/can't deal with her getting pregnant, then using both just gives you a little extra safety...
also the reason I ask is a girl a know has been with her bf for over 2 years and shes on the pill and they dont use condoms, she says BC is more effective than a condom so thats what they use...thanks.
