i think what you've heard about is called implantation bleeding. it's typically a light flow and brown-ish from what i've researched. i believe about 1/3 of pregnant women experience it. you can do a google search on it and learn more.
if you worry about your girlfriend getting pregnant so much, why not use some more reliable bc? i can't imagine getting myself so worked up every cycle.

Implant spotting is quite common and comes at the time a fertilized egg implants itself in the lining of the uterus . It does not seem like a period; it is spotting.
Some women reportedly do have periods throughout their pregnancies. Some women have delivered and said they were not aware of being pregnant. How common? I have only read about these situations and never seen a patient who has had more than one period while pregnant.
