You really should always use an anti-bacterial toy cleaner. Using soaps/detergents and stuff that isn't made to clean sex toys can cause all sorts of damage to your toys. Toy cleaner is the best thing for sex toys in general, however, certain toys (glass, metal, 100% platinum silicone) can actually be bleached in a 10 part water soak, but I think that is really going a little too far, IMO. I wouldn't want bleach inside my insides. ;) The place I shop from has easy spray on, rinse or wipe off cleaner that works really well:
Anything that is repeatedly used in contact with body fluids must be cleansed regularly. Use one part white vinegar with two parts warm water. Soak for twenty minutes. This is an old fashioned hospital wash and will not harm either the body nor any toy.
Anything that regularly goes inside you (menstrual cup, diaphragm, toys, whatever) should get this treatment. Stay away from anti-bacterial soaps and liquid bleach.

Lemme get it..
Dildo care and cleaning

Selecting the right lube:
In all cases a water based lube is recommended. It will not break down condoms and does the slippery kinda thing quite well.
Oil-based lubes and even massage oils are the most dangerous lubes to use with your toys. Oil-based products will destroy and disintegrate all latex products, many jelly products and some silicone or acrylic toys, depending on its mixture.

Cleaning:
The BEST way to keep your toys clean is to not actually get them dirty by first covering the toy with a condom. Now for some toys this is just plain silly because they are SO simple to clean (such as plastic, silicone, acrylic.)
The jelly/latex (rubber) type toys are a different story. The material is very porous. It has minute holes that can hold onto bacteria and other unfriendly things. For these kinds of toys condom use is the best way to keep them clean.
Jelly or latex (rubbery) dildos are common. These dildo's take special care. The best way to clean jelly dildos is with soap and warm water, but this does not sterilize the surface. Never use rubbing alcohol to clean jelly, jelly will degrade if it is exposed to rubbing alcohol (or oil based lube.)
Plastic can be cleaned with soap and water, then followed with rubbing alcohol
Most silicone products are pretty durable and of very high quality They are easy to clean because they are naturally non-porous. Clean by using soap and water, followed by some rubbing alcohol. It's also often suggested that they are top-rack dishwasher friendly...
Acrylic is extremely smooth and nonporous. Easy to clean, with soap/water or sex toy cleaner. The material is nearly indestructible, but will scratch.
Cyberskin should be cleaned with the cyberskin cleanser... it should come with a sample, if not, you should go out and buy some.
Also know that some dildo's don't play nice with each other in storage. Some of the materials will discolor the other materials on extended contact. Vinyl and jelly don't play nice together.
It's still safe to use, there's nothing wrong with it... but it's not exactly something you want your boyfriend finding.

If you're going to store your dildos together in the same box, please wrap them up in something, possibly a ripped up old t-shirt
you don't want something like the above picture happening in your drawer
ok, i just orderd my girlfriend a sex toy and it has cyberskin sleves for it. i was reading up on the cleaning of cyberskin and found out that they can never be conpletely disinfected. does the cyberskin cleaner work good? and also for storage they say to dust cornstarch on it to keep the slikey smooth feeling and to make them not so stickey. this is supposed to be washed off before use or is it ok to go inside? : / sorry for the ignorance... just gotta know.
Thanks

Thanks for the heads up. I can understand the soaps; but why not the anti-bacterial?
Although, I might add that I certainly loved the natural remedy you suggested. I was curious about the why not of it all?

Great information. I glad you took the time out to explain so thoroughly. I've always kept my dildos in the satin bag the come in. I was unaware of the discoloration factor when mixing.
It looks awful. I'm glad, I didn't make that mistake, even if it was ignorantly.

This cyberskin sleeve, could you elaborate on it. Sounds like something new. I'm always interested in something new.
Can't believe this one is new to me, must be getting to comfortable with my current toys.
Heillei, I would think you should wash it before using it and the cornstarch is just for storing. You should use condoms with cyberskin, since it cannot be disinfected.

I'm away of the hygiene portion of sex toys. It was the terminology cyberskin sleeve that threw. But, I got it now.

Your toy SHOULD come with care instructions, but if it doesn't, clean it before and after each use with a gentle toy cleaner.
Anything that is repeatedly used in contact with body fluids must be cleansed regularly. Use one part white vinegar with two parts warm water. Soak for twenty minutes. This is an old fashioned hospital wash and will not harm either the body nor any toy.

Hot soapy water, mine are all silcone. After each use.
