I received this in the mail today from a group called The Concerned Canadian Parents. I intend to send letters and emails to my MP to make *my* point of view well known, I encourage you all to email him and do the same.
THE SAME-SEX MARRIAGE BILL C-38 WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
This Bill in NOT about Minority Rights. It is the thin edge of a wedge that will destroy our Canadian way of life -- and damage our families!
-Tampering with the definition of marriage will spell disaster for the moral and social welfare of our country.
-The danger is imminent that politiciants will force this anti-marriage legislation through a second readying immediately!
-Our greatest Canadian treasure is about to be dumped into the garbage can of history
-The suicidal rush to fundamentally change a 6,000 year old institution is the canker that will destroy the roots of Canada's 'living tree'
Attached to it came a postcard that said something to the extent of "I encourage you to vote NO on bill C-38" addressed to my local MP. So in response I am going to encourage all of my peers and family members to email my local MP and encourage him to vote YES on C-38.

Note, this wasn't from my local MP, but this blatant use of bullshit propaganda by the CCP has pushed me to get involved and hopefully get others involved.
Also note, voting NO on C-38 is AGAINST same sex marriage, and voting YES on C-38 is FOR same sex marriage.
personally id ont care if people get "married" or make a "union" both should get the same benifits.. but since everyones in a huff about the word MARRIED.. why not just call it a union.. sounds good to me! lol

The reality of the gay marriage debate can best be seen in what's going on in the US right now in the US Senate. There is a huge debate over senate rules on the current nominee for US Embassador to the United Nations.
Now, you may ask how this connects to the gay marriage debate? Simple - JUDICIAL NOMINATIONS!
The radical right has mobilized to the point where they know that the only branch of the US Government that will be an obsticle to solidifying their religious precepts into the very fiber of our government is JUDGES!
The current fight over this UN nomination is about the confirmation process for future appellet, circuit and supreme court judge nominations.
Now, lets give credit where credit is due....the religious right knows that it will be a few more years before the case of gay marriage comes to the supreme court....they want to make sure there are plenty of conservative jurists there to put a stop to any efforts to bring true eqality to all members of American society.
Look at what's going on. Mass has legal marriage for gay couples, Connecticut just had a ruleling that will make gay marriage a reality, CA's supreme court has also found that their constitution is flawed and is due to rule on the rights for gays to marry there.
EVERY one of these items are based on a judicial review of gay marriage, equal protection and equal rights. This scares the shit out of the religious right, because they don't want this trend to continue and the only way to stem that tide is to fill vacant judicial positoins with extrememly religious/conservative people.
The fight for gay marriage, and other key rights is up for grabs RIGHT NOW! I've already written my state senator, and i hope you'll do the same. Let them konw your feelings!

Nope, Erik, you didn't anger anyone (well, me, at least..lol). It's a reasonable question. Here's my answer:
First of all, religious groups DON'T hold a copyright on the term "marriage". What do we call two atheists who wed? They're married, right? Each individual religion has marriage ceremonies. Do you think that Hindus who marry are doing so "under God"? No one tries to deny other faiths their rights to marriage just because they aren't marrying under a specific religion.
Second, there ARE religious organizations that WILL perform same-sex services already. Don't those organizations have the same right to their beliefs as everyone else?
Finally, "Why insist on calling it marriage if civil unions have the same rights?" Because people being what they are, civil unions will always be seen as less than marriage. If they aren't "as good" then what rights might be denied? Segregation doesn't work in racial matters. It shouldn't be allowed in matters of sexual orientation either.
