I once read that candlesticks were an efficient and inexpensive alternative to a dildo. I was thinking about using one to loosen myself up. Any recommendations?

Don't use a candlestick! The edges could be sharp... you don't want to put anything "down there" the could be harmful. Don't use a candle either....
Little vibrators or dildo's are easy to find and affordable from your local sex store, or online. From as little as AU$10 (US$8) you can get a 14cm one.
Don't forget playing with yourself, using your fingers is the most inexpensive of all :)
and if you are too young to go to your local sex store or order things online then yes, fingers or such items which are not sharp and do not have breakable parts are quite good.
