There are a few differences here, Ducy. A neo-natal does not have a developed immune system whilst adults do have. Both are caused by the herpes simplex virus but by different strains of the virus. In the body during periods of latency the cold sore kind hangs out at the top of the spine and the genital herpes hang out at the bottom of the spine. They most generally do not affect the opposite's favorite spots.
A new born exposed during birth is bathed in the virus and it can cause various problems including mouth sores, genital sores or develop in the eye. The common factor in all these is mucous membrane with an undeveloped immune system.
And, regarding your current signature about bears: in primate laboratories, it is not uncommon to ban women from the cage areas during the woman's period. Some species of monkeys go absolutely bonkers!
