In the old days, it was easy. A woman continued using her diaphragm religiously for a year after her last period. Today, we have greater choice but complexity that really requires talking with your doctor. For some women, the pill would be fine; for others, a risky proposition. Only someone with your medical and family history can estimate whether the hormones would be acceptable at this point.
Your periods will become less predictable and, therefore, your ovulation as well. You really will not know when ovulation has ceased and you really do not want to fertilize those overly mature eggs. Risky.
You may wish to consider going with spermicide alone. It is a good approach but is not as certain as using with the condom or female condom. Some doctors may recommend inserting an IUD. Most women would likely choose to use a combination of barrier and spermicide. Talk it out with your doctor.
