Nuvaring questions...?

My girlfriend recently went on the nuvaring, now here i am feeling stupid because i havent even heard of this thing until recently. So from what i understand, it releases hormones periodicaly? which....sorta blows my mind that it even works..."crosses fingers". And also, is it safe? Anyone with expierience? ....... And sorry for all my questions lately.

Man, my last 2 posts I advocated Nuvaring, I feel silly. But yes, I'm on NuvaRing, have been for about a year and half. I really like it, and I haven't gotten pregnant so it's worked for me. Yes, it releases hormones periodically, it's low dose but as affective as anything else from what I understand. If you're worried, look at the info packet that comes with it. There is a chart of its effectiveness compared with other methods of birth control. Used correctly, 2 women out of a hundred will become pregnant on NuvaRing after one year. Which is basically the same odds as anything. I haven't had any side effects and I really like it. I know what you mean though, it doesn't seem to be that popular for some reason. Personally, I don't know why. So many girls write posts "I forgot to take my pill, what do I do?" where if they just chose to go on Nuvaring they wouldn't have to have that grief. I think the cool thing about Nuvaring is that it's easier to take correctly than a lot of other birth control. You can google them and come up with the website, all the info that is on the info packet should be there as well.

An added benefit of NuvaRing is that it's absorbed through the blood stream rather than going through your stomach, so while on the Pill a lot of antibiotics decrease the effectiveness, NuvaRing doesn't have that problem (from what I've read on their website/med journals). Anyway, I think it's perfectly safe and effective, and I really like it.

Because it bypasses the stomach and liver, a much lower dose is needed to be effective. It is as effective as any of the hormonal systems. I tell my patients to look out for the same drug interactions as with the pill. I know what the site says but still recommend backup contraception if on anti-biotics.

Do you need a prescription for NuvaRing? I've been on the pill for almost two years now and I hate taking it every day... And I don't have a lot of time to go to the gynecologist.

Yes, you do need a prescription.
Yes, you should see your doctor if for no other reason than to have your questions answered.
Yes, you should see your doctor also if you have not had a yearly check up.

I just started using Nuvaring and I absolutly love it, I even downloaded the "nuvatime" install from the website which alerts you when its time to take out your ring and put in a new one. For me nuvaring has been perfect, I haven't had any problems.. but I do have a question. My boyfriend is still using condoms, it's been over a week since I have inserted my Nuvaring, but he is scared to not use the condoms. I know nuvaring has a 2 out of 100 rating, but still with correct use of nuvaring do we really need to still use condoms?

ps. Im completely new to birth control all together, nuvaring is my first birth control and I started using it about a week and a half ago.

Most do not use condoms and BCP or rings if in a monogamous relationship. Condoms are the disease protectors. And they will reduce the chance of you being that small statistic who becomes pregnant.

Use both? Your choice.
