According to Brandye's stats on BC failure rates; for every 100 women on the pill (used properly) 3 will become pregnant. Other stats I have seen state 1 in 100 women will become pregnant. Not taken into consideration in these numbers are those who skip pills, are late taking them, or have taken a medication which interferes with the efficacy of the pill.

The majority of women who use the pill alone do not use another form of BC unless they are young and wish to eliminate all risks. Some woman has to be the small percentage which become pregnant but again it's a very tiny number. If this is going to drive you insane, use a condom or a vaginal contraceptive film (VCF) with the pill to be certain. The benefit of condoms are they protect against STD's as well.

If you are on the pill it's sufficient for the majority of relationships to prevent pregnancy. Having him "pull out" does not change the stat's considerably only a spermicide or barrier method added does.

Tummykins,

I'm a guy in my mid-40s.

Never once has it happened to my partner-on-the-pill to become pregnant while taking it - and I estimate that the pill was the sole BC technique used for say 10+ years throughout my sexually-active life. We never "doubled up" methods, i.e. pill+condom or other type. I really don't think you should be overly concerned here, regardless of frequency.

Wagie,

Some couples go for years with no protection. The results for one woman are simply that - results for her.

Sera's insights are right on. The reason for the difference of companies reports and mine are reality. During drug trials the women are contacted every day to remind them of their pill at the same time. These approach the theoretical efficacy of the pill. The figures I have plastered all over the forums are real life. If a risk of three per hundred for a year is acceptable, nothing else is needed. Most women in stable relationships and on the pill use nothing else.
