Today Sponge experience, anyone?
So, my boyfriend and I are planning on having sex fairly soon and I've been investigating different over-the-counter options. I've come to the conclusion that condoms can sometime get tricky with an uncircumcised penis can be a tricky and somewhat experimental business, and I can't afford an accident. So, I'm thinking that female birth control might be the best choice for us.
I discovered a product called the Today Sponge. Basicly, it's a sponge made out of a latex-free materiel that's hypoallergenic for all most everyone and has spermicide already in it. In addition, it can be put into the vagina 8 hours before sex and kept in for 24 hours , and even can be used multiple times. And finally, they aren't very expensive and have a high rate of effectiveness. It sounds too good to be true! So I'm just curious if anyone's used this product and wants to share any advice or experiences. |

They never left the market in Europe and, I understand are back on the market in N. America. They are slightly more effective than spermicide alone.
They are good for married couples for whom pregnancy would not be devastating. If 100 sexually active women use the sponge exactly as directed for a year, ten will become pregnant. For couples for whom pregnancy would be worse, they are a good backup to condoms. They should not be used with other contraceptives except condoms. The European model has three spermicides in the formulation. They offer no STD protection. Remember, birth control limits pregnancy; none absolutely prevents pregnancy.
