Exclamation Whats involved in abortion? Help!!!!

Ok, so my girlfriend has missed a couple of her periods. She is doing a doctors pregnancy test as I type, but we were talking before about the abortion (if it is positive...this is what we are planning on doing)

So lets say she is under 12 weeks pregnant - what is involved in the abortion, and will it cause her any stress? She is worried as she is very self-conscious and doesn't really want the doctor 'down there' so does it involve anything like that or is it a pill or injection or anything?

Thanks.

Ummm....

If it's positive, time to grow up really fast and get over the doctor being "down there". There is no choice, the doctor has to check and if it's a pill they still check, if it's a surgical term. of pregnancy (TOP) you both need to see what's involved from the doctor, and the doc does extensive work in the vaginal canal and uterus.

Depends on how far along she is on a medical termination or surgical termination (done in the office).

Stress? Yeap, be ready to be there for her; it's less stressful then having an unwanted pregnancy & a child. But it's not a pleasant experience.

If it's positive call and get an appointment with the doctor ASAP, not in a week, especially since she has missed several, you have no time to play around with this. Or get into planned parenthood, they council prior to doing anything.

This must be discussed with a doctor. If she is still within the time, RU-486 (mifepristone) can be administered. Generally, that is available up to about ten weeks and is a series of pills. Women I know who have taken mifepristone are not anxious to do it again.

If she and her doctor decide that that is not advisable, then a chemical or mechanical abortion is required. The first has a solution injected, through the cervix into the uterus that will kill the foetus; the second involves dilating the vagina and cervix and scraping the uterine walls.

Women need to learn to tolerate a doctor "down there." None of us like it but it is part of keeping healthy. Stress? Very high. No woman goes through an abortion without stress.

She and her doctor are now in charge; your role is to remain supportive and stay out of the way.

How do you let a "couple" of periods go by w/out taking a test??

The one time I was like a week late I started panicking and took a test like everyother day for a week till it finally came. They kept saying negative, but I just didn't believe it! lol

Like the posts above said, just be supportive and help her as much as you can. Don't try to smother her, let her have her space.... but when she needs a shoulder, always be there for her!

Thanks, so chances are that it could just be an injection or some pills. It would only be a max ten weeks anyway so it would likely be a pill yes?

Say she had to have the medical termination....does the doctor still have to go 'down there' or is it injected through the skin....I know its one of them things that she will have to cope with but she REALLY REALLY is not wanting the Doctor to go down there, and I don't want to scare her by saying he HAS to if it can be avoided.

We let it go a couple of months because she is going through Major stress at the moment and thought that it might be something to do with that.

And do you know if it is possible for the Doctor to do it in the practice or is it something that has to happen at a hospital =S

I am going to be very supportive of her don't worry, she knows i'm here when she needs me, but is a person that hides her emotions (like crying) ALOT so I guess I will just have to do some guess work with her.

Thanks guys.

Anytime you go to a Gyno they are going to be looking "down there".
Like Brandye said above... if they have to do the chemical abortion, a solution is injected through the cervix into the uterus. If you aren't familiar the cervix is in the back of the vagina.. so yes someone will be down there to do that. It's something that can't be avoided. Anytime you are having an "issue" w/ your female anatomy... and pelvic exam is usually involved!!

And from what I have seen/read... anytime you have any type of abortion, you have to follow up awhile later for them to check inside and make sure everything was "cleaned out" otherwise it could lead to major problems down the road.

I think some DRs are able to perform them at their clinics... I guess it depends on what type she is needing.

How old is your G/F by the way?? I mean it does suck having to go to the GYNO but it is part of being a woman and something that we ALL have to just get over it and do it!!!!! I wanted to get on the pill so I MADE myself go and it wasn't as bad as I thought. Having a female DR made me more comfortable. She just has to "man up" so to speak and get over it, no one likes to go... but millions of woman do it.

I can probably guarentee that going to see a GYNO w/ just the DR and maybe 1 asst. HAS to be better than when you give birth and you are sprawled out for every person who walks in to see you "down there"... that's one of my major childbearing hesitations lol.

So is she prego or not?!!? I thought you said she was testing last night? will will she get the results?

Regarless of what form of a TOP is decided, she will have to have a full gyn exam before and follow ups after. There is no way around this, there is no avioding this. Just get her to the doctors office, get an appointment, staying here asking questions is not helping the matter...she needs to see her MD and have the doctor explain the process fully. You filling in the blanks with info here is not going to help her, just let the doctor do it.

If the termination can be performed it is done in a doctors office, unless she is beyond 12 weeks (generally).

The doctor can figure out how far along she is based on her last cycle, if not it is determined through blood work.

She is 18 im 19. Results are to be found out in a couple of days, the doctor has tested urine for other things aswell (such as sugar levels) just for general reasons, but priority is pregnancy!

She has to wait until the results are at her doctors before she can find out any information from him, so I thought I would ask on here to find a few extra things out to calm her down as she is getting really anxious about it.

We are trying to sort this out asap, but the doctors have other idea's, its a problem because they are only open a few days in the week....hence the waiting for the results to come through.

So from getting results to the actual 'getting rid of it' would it take weeks or will the doctor generally do it immediately?

Thanks again guys.

Hidden you have read what you wanted to see and ignored the rest. Re-read my earlier. To be graphic with either the chemical or mechanical procedure, she will lay on a table with her feet up in stirrups and spread very wide. Then the doctor will place a speculum in her to spread the vagina. And proceed from there.

You need to sharpen your reading skills because chances are it will be one of these. You will be waiting outside.
