Could I have it & not know?

Almost 4 years ago I had a sexual partner who was diagnosed with Type 2 HSV. We were always careful, but with herpes you can never be too careful. I was tested 3.5 years ago, after we quit seeing each other, and again last March. Both tests were negative, so I thought I was fine. Recently a friend of mine found out she had contracted HPV. Her doctor told her that she would probably never know who she got it from because a person can have it for years before it is activated, even as much as 10 years. The thought of having something and not knowing is a little freaky. My main concern is that I am now in a long term monogomous relationship. My fear is that previous lapses in judgement could come back to haunt both of us. Is it possible for someone to have HSV for years, like HPV, and not know? Is HPV the only virus that can stay inactive for that length of time?

Read Brandye's posting on cervical cancer. HPV can go undetected for years and many never know they had it...there is some new testing available now. Either way read her post, she addresses the topic of HPV there. As far as Herpes, get to your doctor for testing, it is a virus any can be dormant.
