Emily11 has some great thoughts here. I did the former, except I am on the ring (NuvaRing) rather than the Pill. They did take my blood pressure (which is that band that tightens around your arm, no blood drawn or anything) and initially they asked me about my diet and general health. The visit was about 5 minutes, but call ahead and get an appointment because the drop-in wait time for free health clinics is awful! Oh, the first time they also tested my hemoglobin levels, which was a little needle prick on my finger and they used that tiny bit of blood and run it through a machine right there. But, I think I could have said no to that, it wasn't painful, and they have not done this on follow ups.
The local clinic option is totally free, totally confidential. I do have health care insurance, but through my healthcare, I would still have to pay for birth control, and this way, it's absolutely free. So, I do recommend this as a good option. The people at my clinic are also very friendly and helpful, and I really like the ring. Good luck! |

Planned Parenthood will not disclose any information regarding your healthcare to anyone ie:family. If you are 12 y/o or under and a parent requests information regarding your healthcare for reproductive health, the center will ask your permission to disclose the information first. If you do not agree, then they will disclose NO information. So at PP all info is confidential and does not require parental consent including: birth control, pelvic exams, abortions, and STD checks & STD treatment regardless of age.
Also, ANY ONE seeking STD check's, STD treatment, a pregnancy test, or seeking care/treatment for a rape DOES NOT require parental consent regardless of age. If you presented to the emergency room where I worked for any of the above I CANNOT contact your parents, police, nor can I even admit that you had been in the ER if your parent called or showed up. Your rights are protected under Federal Law. The local Planned Parenthood is where we referred minors to for birth control, pregancy issues, etc. Go on the website for your area and read then give a call to schedule an appointment. |

Somewhere deep in the Sexual Health: Women forum is an old thread on Your First GYN exam. Read it. All women should have a complete exam before becoming sexually active.
I am aware that PP in some places gives out a 3 month supply of pills with no exam. Please, have the exam and have a good chat with the doctor. I spend more time talking to those "first time" patients than examining them. In UK and most of Europe, 16 yo get a prescription themselves. No parents
