There threads on this. The "morning after pill" can be one several. Taking it, or the combination, that quickly gives a good chance that it will work. Overall, the morning after approach is effective three-quarters of the time.
I will make an assumption that she was prescribed a hormonal pill. It is essentially an "overdose" of regular birth control pills. She will likely feel crappy for a while and her cycle will be messed up for a month or two. No women I know who have used "emergency contraception" are anxious to do it again.
