missed period, possibilities?

Hi all. My girlfriend of 8 years has always been irregular, since I've known her. She originally went on the pill way back when to control it. She used to get 3 weeks of period, 1 week off etc... We then moved over to the depo shot, and that lasted between 5-6 years. About 1.5-2 years ago we decided to stop using it, just in case it might affect future decisions to have kids.

Her periods haven't been regular since she stopped taking the shot. Now, a few weeks ago (a little over 2 weeks) her period didn't come. So we got a little worried. We've been known to have sex without condoms, but never until ejaculation (we usually switch to the condom after a few minutes of fun). So I was a little worried... BUT, we also have performed 4 pregnancy tests (2 from brand X, 2 from brand Y) and all came up negative (this is 1.5-2 weeks after the period being late). She's had some symptoms like soreness of the breasts, the lateness of course, and some minor weight gain (a few pds).

How likely is it that we're expecting? Could this be something else? I know that logically it points to something else than pregnancy, and we're seeing a doctor about a blood test soon, but how realistic is it to think that we're pregnant?

Thanks for the help.

The tests the doctor will perform are more dependable than the home tests. Four tests saying the same thing is pretty good if more than a week from conception. Not much can be said except see what the doctor says. It is not realistic to think you are pregnant; it is not realistic to rule it out completely.

See the doctor as soon as practicable to keep all options open.

Thanks. I figured as much. My logical side is telling not to worry about it, but there's a nagging feeling inside of my chest that says I'm gonna be a daddy... I guess I'll wait it out until Friday.

Thanks again.

Its the uncertainty that kills me. I know that whatever the outcome, I'll be committed to it 100%... I refuse to raise a child in doubt or with pent up feelings of resentment and all. I've had some time to think about these things, and in the end, if we're slated to have a kid in 9 months, I will easily become a Dad, all the way.

I just hate the wait for an answer.

The American Pregnancy Association forums also have helpful info on fertility -- for preventing pregnancy as well as trying to conceive Regardless of other birth control methods, though, the condom is still my friend....

That wait always takes longer then it should! Whether it be a "scare" or "hope" it's always TOO LONG!!!!!

So what was the outcome?? Are you gonna be a daddy?
I'm a little late to this post, so you should know by now.

Just wanted to say that the "effects" of pregnancy you mentioned, sore breasts, weight gain, etc are all these I experience the week or so before my period It could be that.

You sound like me every 6 months to a year. My wife has the same issue with irregular cycles. Her hormones have been known to adjust to one type of pill then they'll have to switch.

I don't think I'll ever get used to it. Granted she's worse than I am. I get the call about her being "late" and I'm always the one to say "well what else is new you are always late". Of course over the years the definition of late has moved from the exact 12 hour period of the day it should start to almost 3 weeks. I'm surprised I didn't get an ulcer from the month it never came.
