Look in Chick Chat for a rundown on the safety of various methods of birth control. The pill is the most common method used by women in their very late teens and twenties. Most, in stable relationships, do not use any additional protection. If the relationship is not a semi-permanent one, the condom is a good idea for STD protection.
Statistically, if 100 sexually active women are on the pill (taken properly) for a year, three will become pregnant. If you add a condom, every time, this will drop to almost zero.
Contraception reduces the chance of becoming pregnant - there is no way to have sex with no chance of pregnancy. We each decide what level of risk, convenience and safety we can live with.
For my teen years and in University (after my lesbian stage), I always used condoms plus spermicidal jelly. While later living with two different men, I was on the pill and used nothing else. After my fiance died, I had my tubes cut. Those were my choices; you have to make your own.
