All men experience erectile dysfunction at some time regardless of age. Look at the boards and you find teens in that situation. The difference with age is that it moves from being psychologically based to physically based.
This can be affected by general physical conditioning (couch potatoes have more problem), smoking, length of relationship (a new friend sparks them up), general interest in life, medications. The last are not usually considered by doctors but are a major cause of erectile problems. Anti-depressants are particular problems but your doctor is so focused on getting you out of a funk, he often ignores side effects.
I have seen no studies on age at start of need. I will guess it is over forty but under sixty. Some doctors will give prescriptions to help early in the symptom stage. Their theory is that it will firm you up, make it better feeling, and get you back on the right track. I am in this camp; there is nothing wrong with having some around even if you do not use them frequently. Other doctors wait until it is a usual thing to fail and then give you a boost.
The life-style issues, medications and general boredom with life have got to be considered - by you.
