While with my girlfriend today at the county health department, I noticed something conflicting with the materials I was reading. This site (and others) state that if the morning after pill was not effective, it could damage the fetus. The materials they are distributing say it will not. I have asked both sides to cite their sources so I can get to the bottom of this.

The emergency contraceptive/morning-after pill has three possible ways in which it can work (as does the regular birth control pill):

1. Ovulation is inhibited, meaning the egg will not be released;
2. The normal menstrual cycle is altered, delaying ovulation; or
3. It can irritate the lining of the uterus so that if the first and second actions fail, and the woman does become pregnant, the human being created will die before he or she can actually attach to the lining of the uterus.

In other words, if the third action occurs, her body rejects the living human embryo, and the child will die. This result is a chemical abortion.

My girlfriend took this morning after pill a week ago now and now has dizziness. Is this something related to the pill\pregnancy or is this just something out in left field? She thinks she may be spotting, but hasn't let enough time to go by yet to know for sure. Is this a sign of a sucessful pill?

Very hard to say... not even the dr would know without a blood test to detect certain hormones that would be present.

The effectiveness of the morning after pill depends on if implantation has taken place or not... If it has taken place, there can be complications. Even with later term saline abortions they dont always work and the fetus survives regardless. However, when using a oill that early in a pregnancy as you would the morning after, the major risk is to the woman..

If I were you, Id take her to a dr if she is worried about it. Why worry when you can find out the success so easily.

She's kinda apprehensive about contacting them, but if she's still not feeling well today, I think I'll make her call them. The only thing worse than feeling bad is uncertainty about why. The only thing worse than that is being able to find out why, and not.

Exactly! I think its great you are concerned about her! She shouldnt be apprehensive, but if she is just reassure her and tell her youre worried about the way she is feeling. Maybe she needs a little more support about it. More than likely its the hormone stuff making her feel like crap, but as always its better safe than sorry when youre taking this kinda stuff. Everybody reacts differently.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Dizziness is a side effect. You can also bleed and have spotting.

And not everyone has the side effects.

My friend took it and had no pain, no nausea, no bleeding, no dizziness no god knows how many other side effects from it.
