I have a really close friend that has HPV, and I was wondering if I kissed him would I also get the disease? Or can it only be given by having sex, oral or vaginal. And can a condom help prevent?

Follow this link to the Sexinfo101 site info on Genital Warts (HPV).
HPV is extremely contagious and is transmitted mostly through intimate contact of moist surfaces (i.e., oral sex, vaginal intercourse, etc.). There does not have to be any physical manifestation of the virus for it to be transmittable. Normal kissing should not be a problem though.

If you are not coming into contact with his genital area, you do not have much to worry about. Kissing him will not spread the disease. HPV can be spread through vaginal or anal sex and, very rarely, through oral sex. A condom may decrease the chances of transmitting it. However, condoms are less effective in protecting against this disease than against most other STDs, because it is transmitted on contact, even when there is no fluid exchange.

There are 2 types of herpes, type 1 and type 2. Type 1 is usually on your mouth, commonly called a cold sore or fever blister. type 2 is usually on the genitals and called genital herpes or HPV. Type 1 can easily spread from mouth to mouth contact and type 2 can be spread easily from genital to genital contact.
*The thing is, even though type 1 is usually on the mouth and type 2 is usually on the genitals, 2 can be transfered to your mouth and 1 can be transfered to genitals. So if u have a cold sore and u give someone oral sex, u can give them type one herpes on their genitals. And if he has genital herpes, hpv, and u give him oral sex, you can get type 2 on your mouth. but it wont spread to your genitals if your gentals dont touch. if he doesnt have hpv or cold sores on his mouth, u cant get it from him by kissing. good luck. |

You are confusing HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) - commonly known as Genital Warts, with HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus) - commonly known simply as Herpes. These darn acronyms all sound alike don't they!? Sprints was enquiring about HPV.

Yes, HPV can be transmitted through oral sex, but it is less common than transmitting the disease through vaginal or anal sex. To be safe, it is a good idea to use a condom or dental dam during oral sex.

HPV has many strains. Some strains include symptoms, some do not. An estimated 80+% of the population either has HPV or has had it. Some strains typically go away on it's own within a year of first contact. Many forms are not protected by condoms, and passing it back and forth will lengthen the recovery time. There are some forms of HPV that cause cervical cancer, but have no symptoms such as genital warts, etc. The strains that cause cancer are not transmitted to the mouth and does not affect a man other than using him as a "transfer station" so to say. Also the only way for a woman to know if she has it is to have a pap. There are no visable signs of it. I would find out which he has, and then decide if it's worth it to be involved sexually.
