I don't like any of them. Blah. But sometimes we must do what we don't like. Anyways, she should talk to her doctor and he or she can help figure out what's best for her. If taking a pill everyday is a hassle she'd rather not have or if she might be prone to forgetting to take it, then the shot or patch would probably be best.

I hope she is medically insured, it may push things back a bit.

I was going to be put on the pill but i dont have health insurance. I need my annual check up at the gyno but it costs 200-250 just for the visit..i cant afford that right now so i have to wait. i can only imagine what the prescription for the pill will cost.. ick not having insurance sucks..

Vixen, I'm in the same boat as you right now. I just lost my health insurance July 1. Hopefully my promotion to full-time at work will go through by the end of the month. If not, I'm fucked. I take medicine everyday for excruciating migraine headaches, and if I don't take these...I feel like killing myself and everyone around me. And that coupled with the fact that if I stop taking this medicine, withdrawal makes me violently ill. Ugh. We need to have some kind of national health insurance program. Too many people don't have it, and even those who do are getting ripped off. We need health care reform.

All the possibilities you cite are hormonal approaches. She should be asking the question, not you; it is her body that will be getting medicated; not yours.

All are good methods for some and terrible methods for others. Look at the upside of each and then the down. Shot once a month; go to the doctor to get it. Patch is non-invasive; you always have a plaster on. Pills are most convenient; you have to remember to take them.

In the UK, the insurance is not an issue. Let me try to project on some other countries. There are some pills available as generics that would cost much less than some specific, newer, proprietary brands. Some of these cost only 20% as much as the specified brands. Talk to your doctor, chemist or the local Planned Parenthood about each of these techniques and, if an issue, the cost associated with each. She may also wish to consider some non-hormonal methods such as the IUD or the sponge. Many women do not wish to alter the chemical make-up of their bodies.

Please go to a dictionaary and look up "incite" and "insight."

I had the small problem of no insurance when I was looking at birth control. I went to planned parenthood to get a lot of info and they are actually pretty decent on prices. To get your annual done, it was only around $65 or something like that I think. For the depo shot, I was only paying $75 every 3 months. But this was also in SC. I'm not sure what the prices are elsewhere, but it's an idea. It's better than not going and getting pregnant.

I know this may be a stupid question but I thought planned parenthood was a place for teenagers to go.. do they assist all ages?

Yes they do, at least in Ohio.
I went my first PP appt. when I was 14.
And I'd say thats pretty young.
They are a wonderful organization.

Good luck.

First off, PP is for everyone, male and female and covers all ages. *Most of them also have a sliding fee scale for those without insurance. *That being said, I have had no luck with any form of birth control. *I tried the depo shot and ended up having my period solid for six months. *That sucked. *I tried the pill and ended up having my period twice per cycle. *I tried the patch and not only did it leave you all sticky every week, but my periods ended up being really heavy for 10-12 days out of the month. *My body does not like having my hormones messed with. *Normally I have a very normal and regular cycle, but not on birth control. *I talked to PP and they recommend using a cervical cap or the diaphram. *If you use it with foreplay it can be enjoyable. *Also you can have "clean" sex while having your period because the diaphram holds it in. *Good plus *Your girlfriend will have to try a few and see what works best for her. *Good luck.
