There is about a 48 span during which you can become pregnant. The books say two days before and two days after ovulation. The sperm will live up to 2 days in the female reproductive tract and the egg can take up to two days to travel down the fallopian tubes. Good for planning. Two days is a realistic figure when trying to get pregnant and four days when trying to stay unpregnant. In most of us, the time of ovualtion is imprecise, so when doing a "natural" birth control, you are out of vaginal action for at least a week.
The directions with pregnancy tests should be followed. Some will indicate that they are effective seven days after becoming pregnant; others after your period is late. If your period is late, it is too late for the traditional emergency contraception but there is still one drug that can be effective. "Morning after" pills should be taken as soon as possible. After your missed period, you are looking at other issues.
