Without him wearing a condom, it always makes the risks higher with or without the shot or other forms of birth control for you. The best way to go is for both of you to use birth control the pill and a condom.

not wanting to appear too stupid, but what exactly is the shot? im a guy so dont have nearly enough information on birth control, me and my g/f use a condom most of the time or use method of withdrawal, cause we dont want her to get pregnant. what is the shot? and is it better or worse than a condom?

There have been a variety of homonal birth control methods introduced since about 1960. The first, and best know, is "The Pill." The pill delivers a mixture of female hormones into the system from a daily pill. "The Shot" is a more recent development that delivers enough hormone to the woman with one innoculation per month. "The Patch" is a very recent introduction and is a time release patch (similar to the stop smoking patches) that a woman sticks on herself weekly. The same hormones are absorbed through the skin. There is also an implant that place tubes of hormones under the skin that are released over a five year period.

I have been on the shot for @ 4 almost 5 months now. I highly recomend it. The only most common side effects that my doctor tould me that most people complained about:

1.) Irregular bleeding
2.) not bleeding
3.) weight gain.

not all of these happen to everyone. I have had the occasional spoting and noticed a small weight gain but if you keep it under control you will be fine.

I only have a few problems that I had experienced on the shot. I had a lot of weight gain, and I lost all desire to have sex or even foreplay. It just hurt too much to do anything, even with lubs. I was on it for a year and I've decided to try something else other than the shot. Don't get me wrong, the shot was the best thing I had done for myself, just that some of the side effects I couldn't take anymore.
