Click on the following link to open up *The Pill section on this web-site. It sounds like your doctor didn't explain things very clearly for you. If you are taking any medications, you should always get a clear understanding as to how to use them and their benefits/side-effects etc.

If you have been on the Pill for a few months, and are taking it properly, you should be "safe" at all times of the month. Remember though, that no form of birth-control is 100% effective, so using a condom as insurance (at all times) is a good idea, and latex condoms also provide effective protection from STD's. It all depends on level of acceptance you and your b/f have of the risks involved in sex.

Honey,

You should never have left the doctor's office without proper instructions. Call the office and talk to the nurse. For most pills you take them for 21 days and then off for seven. There are others that are slightly different combinations and now, even some that you take every day.

To answer your question, we must know what you are taking. The insert that came with them should be very specific and it is usual that the dispenser leads you through the cycle. After a full month, you should be protected. Remember, as Staalion says, no system is 100% effective and the pill is sensitive to other medication or dietary supplements you are taking and shold be taken at the same time each day.
