asexual

One of my friends has recently decided that he is asexual and claims that he is aroused by 'abstract concepts'. Does this even make sense, or could he just be saying this because he's never had a girlfriend? He seems to be quite serious about the whole thing and I'm kindof confused... (In case its relevant, he's 18).

Abstract concepts as in looking at a picaso painting and getting a hard on?

What he may be talking about is objectophilia, which is a real thing but it is not common. It is being aroused by inanimate objects. Is that what he is talking about?

Oh, I get it... He's had trouble with the ladies, so now he's decided to become a full-blown woman-repeller. Things aren't going the way he'd like, so rather than trying to change things, he's just decided to be done with it and commit social-suicide because, hell - it's a lot easier. Yep, THAT'S contructive...

There's nothing to take seriously here - he's just making excuses for being a loser, which, in turn, makes him a TOTAL LOSER. "Abstract concepts" - Pfft. GIVE ME A BREAK! Tell him that if he doesn't snap out of this pretentious loner image he has going on, he can prepare for a long life of not having sex. He's his own worst enemy...

I'm pretty sure asexual means being able to reproduce solo.. soo.. i'm confused.

Just clicked!

Tell him to find a girlfriend!

I know it is fun to joke around about him needing a girl friend and such. But if he is not faking it, then it could be a serious condition. There are a lot of psychological conditions that people can have concerning sex. If he is actually not attracted to any one of any gender then he could have a real problem. As for him being asexual, he would have to lack any kind of sexuality, meaning he almost never would be aroused by anything. There are people that are asexual but it is rare. On the other hand he could be just going through a phase and just need’s a girl.

I think that by abstract concepts he meant like... I dunno... string theory and philosophy and stuff like that... hence my confusion. But yeah, its essentially what Ducy wrote. I tend to agree with oedipussy and mr saint about the whole thing. I was just wondering if there is actually some sort of known condition which matches his claims.

I have never heard of being turned on by abstract concepts. As I said earlier, there is a condition that is called “objectophilia” which is the sexual attraction to objects. It is no joke it is a real condition. Here is an article about it if you think it could be that.

In short, often this behavior is manifested due to lack of social skills and applying human emotions to inanimate objects. It's a fixation which requires help.

Reminds me of the movie where the guy fell in love with the mannequin.

This over all picture [objective and subjective] is he is inflicting love/care/arousal to object such a a "tree"...they do not share the same stimulation a person does; therefore, feeling are displaced since their capacity is much different. Get your friend out of delusional & in for some help. And try to keep him away from animals until so.

OK, now we're just being silly. "Objectophilia"? Serious condition? More like Psycho-babble and meaningless buzzwords. THERE IS NO SUCH THING! People write about all sorts of stuff - doesn't make it true...

The original poster pretty much answered his own question: This guy is making up crap so he doesn't look like such a loser. The only thing wrong with him is that he lacks in social skills and is displacing blame for his failures. Simple as that.

I am assuming that anaconda’s friend is telling the truth. It is possible that he is just doing it to get attention. Objectophilia is a common enough disorder to be in a college level human sexuality class. (That is where I heard about it as a actual disorder.) I can guaranty you that it is a real disorder and that it is not just “Psycho-babble”.If in fact he has it then he may need professional help. P.S. Sera “Lars and a real girl” is one of my favorite movies.

Sorry, but I have a condition which causes me to not believe in silly made-up conditions. It's very serious psychological disorder, and if you keep talking about this I could actually die...

Hey, I remember that movie, sera! Mannequin with Kim Catrall? But she wasn't actually a mannequin, just a reincarnated Egyptian princess who traveled through time in the form of a mannequin. Gotta love the '80's...

Oedi:

Is that not called reality [your condition]? I recall the movie--gotta love the 80's! All I remember it was the guy who kept passing the store shop...she turned real for him since he would see her move. Ended up in some odd situations!

I do know there is some strange disorder where people give inanimate objects emotions the same as a human feels. Falling in love or sexual desire for such--is, well, strange.

This was onte one Oedi:

Also...was my wedding song. Ughhhhhh...Lol!!!!

well...im a girl and i can get turned on by people talking about such concepts. science, evolution, philosopy and especilly history. Maybe his attraction is more intellectual than physical and being so young he hasnt been exposed to much highly intellectually people. I am extremly attracted to passionate people. male or female. If they truly care about what there talking about all i wanna do is kiss them and take there closes off :)

Along with what stormy was saying.. Whenever one of my friends or I have had a particularly intellectually stimulating conversation with someone ( we value intelligence and find it especially attractive) we refer to it as "mind-fucking". Maybe thats what this kid is after.. But I do agree, objectiphillia is a real thing, as are people who are truly asexual meaning they don't feel sexual attraction to either gender or anything (which isn't what this kid has if he gets sexually aroused by looking at paintings or talking history or whatever).
