Anti-Rape Device

South Africa and surrounding countries have the highest incidence of rape in the world - and the lowest conviction rate of this crime. A South African woman has invented a "protective device" device described at this link:

This has been available in South Africa for a few years. An international medical organization has distributed information to trauma physicians who may be called upon to treat a "victim" of this device. Medical assistance will definitely be required if a man penetrates this device. The removal is a rather arduous process that will leave the physician in a proper state of mind to have the police contacted. Each individual barb needs be removed and each will require several minutes of the physicians time.

This announced protocol in my email led to a google search and there is also a Swedish product, also worn like a tampon, that launches a barbed "harpoon" into the invading penis. That one would be more difficult yet to remove.

Maybe not, iLovell. You're right, I'm probably over-reacting. It's not like I'm even fond of what I'm packing, anyway.

Okay I'm really worried about your understanding of how sex works now, if you think there's any possiblity of being stuck by this thing with a woman you're in a relationship with.

A consenting partner would check upon being reminded that she may not have taken it out.

You don't just shove it in and go as soon as you meet a woman you fancy, you know. You have opportunities to discuss this kind of thing with her. You can even physically stick a finger in to check for it while you're engaging in foreplay to put your mind at ease. It'd still hurt in the VERY unlikely event that she deliberately left the device in, but better than your bits I'm sure.

You're not in much danger, Nervous.

I doubt that you will find many women in non-high risk situations wearing this. And as for her forgetting, I cannot imagine.

I guess I'm not having sex then. Not if such a device becomes available here in the States. I wouldn't be able to tell if she slipped up or not... and I'm not about to take the risk, get my penis impaled, and pay a visit to a hospital paying thousands of dollars just to get my dick fixed. Not worth it, especially since I don't trust surgery.

I think it's a wonderfully clever idea to give women "teeth down there" for their protection!

Downsides? I can't think of any significant ones... It's a pity it won't all together prevent the violator from entering, but at least it will effectively stop the rape immediately. I don't think there's any technique of defense out there that will so effectively do that.

Perhaps women who fall victim to groups of violent men, should the others turn their aggression to her even worse... Then again; we shall never know how much more brutal they'd be than previously intended (and the stories are horrific, the number of women who fall victim to it in Africa unbelievable :(). The element of surprise when one of them is in pain, may just buy her the time to get away. All together I think when it comes to escaping a rape, wearing such a device will give her much much more better chances than without it!

Other than that; off course there could be a stupid unfortunate slip-up. Or even a painful revenge  Any device can be used for evil schemes when desired. That doesn't make it less a good tool for the women who so desperately need it.

I can see only one downfall to this device...

What happens if a girl who's been wearing one of these as protection finally consents to a guy she's been attracted to but forgets she had the device in when the time comes for intercourse?

He is in for one terrible shock.

I would at least hope that any guy that's been consented to doesn't just jab in there in less than a second of foreplay. :)

There were increased sales during the World Cup according to local authorities.

Removal of this device is really quite safe as it is essentially a female condom with stiffeners and a ring at the entrance to the vagina. If the woman does not stick her finger into the device, she is safe and can pull it out as she would a female condom. All the barbed teeth are pointing inward.

The Swedish design even looks like a tampon and is inserted as though it were. It has a spring loaded, barbed needle that, when triggered, plunges into the penis. There is a cap that is used by the woman before pulling the string that even looks like a tampon string.

i remember reading about this device with the world cup was going on. i could have sworn i posted about it here. anyway i have some questions that the article doesn't mention. what is the difficultly for removing this from the vagina once inserted? can they device back fire and the sharp 'teeth' grab the vagina?

Actually, the risks from this device are potentially huge. I bet it increases the risk of HIV transmission exponentially (and South Africa where the device exists is a hotbed of HIV prevalence), so the woman with this device might stop the rape-in-progress, but be much more likely to get HIV.

Erm, I read the article attached and it seems that the device is actually better conceived than I first realized and does not increase the risk of HIV transmission, so ignore my previous post.

Rape-aXe

I was still living in South Africa when they were originally intoduced to the public. You couldn't get hold of it for ages because there was a huge debate about being sold on pharmacy shelves. A lot of "critics" said the device was medieval, vengeful and disgusting... It's disgusting that there was such a need for the device to exist. It's a little traumatising buying a device to stick up your vagina just in case you got raped.... To have to think "oh, I might get raped today so I better put in my Rape-aXe" tends till instill a little more fear in you every day. The people who worry about it being left in by accident shouldn't worry. They're meant to be used only during high risk situations such as going to and from work or school.

I'm glad they've come up with this device. It won't prevent the psychological damage that comes with such an assault and there's also a risk of more violence towards the victim if therapist get aggravated but I'm hoping they'd be incapacated by the pain. Also it prevent HIV and STDs and brings justice so I'm all for it.

That says it all...

"They're meant to be used only during high risk situations such as going to and from work or school."

Highlighting this quote of Muggy, because it so emphasizes the situation these women are in.
Just imagine yourself going to work/school and thinking you're at high risk for being raped! That's sadly horrific, isn't it?

Proof how needed these devices are!
