Another IUD question

My wife has an IUD and my question is how long is an IUD good for and when is it in need of replacing in order to remain an effective form of birth control?

Thanks for the info. She has been too busy with work to go to a gyn checkup since she got out of the army where it was regulated easier and encouraged. I will have to do my husbandly duty to encourage her for such checkups just as I would for a mamogram.

It depends on the type used, need to check with the gyn. Usually 5-8 years, some of the older types are designed to last for an indefinite period of time. I know a little about them, not a whole lot, but the duration would depend on what was type was used & how long ago it was inserted.

I know she had it installed in 2002. Don't know the type other than it was a copper type or something like that.

The answer is something she should be able (and be the best) to provide an answer for you. As well as the duration of the use, she should be best to give you an answer. Not much point in anyone here attempting to theorize about it.

She should be checking with her doctor annually. If it was hormone impregnated, it is time for a new one. The plain copper could theoretically last forever but most doctors will recommend change every five years, perhaps with a few months rest between removal and re-insertion. I would not hesitate to have a patient wear one until menopause.

I am assuming annual gyn checkups.
