Anal Lightening!!! What are they thinking?

A couple of years ago on Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update one of the stories was about a product to lighten the skin around the anus. Taking the source into account I thought it was a joke. Yesterday a female colleague of mine mentioned that in a woman's magazine she had been reading there was an article that said anal lightening is the most popular and common cosmetic treatment/surgery at this moment.
I live in Mexico, where most people are not white anyway, but everyone one I have ever seen up close naked, including blondes and redheads, have a darker skin tone around the anus. On the other hand whiteness is highly valued here and the most popular sex acts, as far as I can tell, are rear entry positions; including anal sex.

Is this craziness going on in the rest of North America or Europe also? Why would anyone do this? Skin lightening is potentially harmful anyway. What is next-men having the pigment in their circumcision scars erased?

Isn't it amazing? I remember there was a line that either Goldie Hawn or Meryl Streep had in the 1992 movie, "Death Becomes Her" that went sarcastically something like, "It would be more fun to have your anus bleached." hehe So, I guess this "treatment" has been in vogue for a while?

Probably caught on from Porn. The "flawless/perfect" look even if iit's touched up or airbrushed. Perhaps people feel it's less of a reminder of where you are going and feel as if they look cleaner?

I would think since the only ways are either laser or chemical treatment, it must be painful. I can ask a patient along the way!

Dlb in the US people are following since lightening & eyelash extension/implants are rated as the new "in" procedures. However, if the flawless look is in; how do they handle tan lines?

Look at the vulva; there is a discoloration what's next, lightening the inner labia & all the folds? People must have; too much money, vanity, or too much time on their hands to worry about this!!!

Seanblush, As far back as Death Becomes Her? wow! Sera, you mention laser and chemical being the skin lightening techniques. Actually the same week that my friend mentioned this silliness to me I had just read an article on the net about ten surgeries/treatment that people don't need and one of those was skin lightening. The article mentioned health risks involved including cancer. And apparently women are also trying to lighten their labia majora.

I was about to think that I am becoming an Old Fuddy Duddy becuase of my inability to comprehend some of these seemingly frivolous cosmetic procedures, but actually I have always preferred things to be more natural.

The overall use of skin lightening is to change the pigmentation & discoloration. There are risks involved. Years back [& currently] it's most often seen where women wish to hide facial sun damage which accumulated over the years. However, if exposed again there are issues. Therefore, since it's the anal area the same "sun risks" are not the issue; I would be most concerned with the tissue damage its self from the enhancement.

There must be something wrong with me. I have never even noticed a porn "actor's" anus.

Strange but true. There is a cosmetic surgery/treatment for anything! If your not a porn star, I don't see the point.
