Ok basically me and my boyfriend really enjoy anal sex on average about 3-4 times a week but I'm scared of what could happen to me - will I damage myself ie could it make my backside too loose - I suppose what I'm really scared of is becoming incontinent or something?! Advice/re-assurance/info would be really appreciated as it's freaking me out!! thanks :o

Am scared of anal sex complications

Well, I have posted extensively on the medical aspects of anal sex. I can no longer find the posts. They caused a bit of a furor because so many people and had no ill effects when they are twenty-seven. They do not understand the cumulative effects when one is sixty-seven.
In the long term, the least bad you can expect is hemorrhoids; the worst is the incontinence you describe. We each have limits we place on our sexual behaviour and anal is just over the line for me.
The anus is a one-way valve and is not intended to have stuff going in. It lacks the elasticity of the vagina and is not intended to become distended to accommodate a penis. There is no natural lubrication.
As long as you are into it, I hope that you are using lots of lube and always a condom. The condom is for the health of each of you. Much male urethritis is from enterobacteria and this is a way to pack them in there. Then, the next time he is in you, not matter how much scrubbing, they get injected into you. Much vaginitia is a result of enterobacteria.
That's put me off anal sex for life.

[/QUOTE]To be fair Brandye I also posted, at age 52 I'm having no ill effects after being active in anal exploration since my teens. Maybe things go to hell in the next fifteen years. :p
I agree however that safety, sensitivity, care and lots of lube are critical for responsible non-destructive anal play.
BTW, here's the thread I think you were looking for -

Thanks, DVD, but the thread I am alluding to was a few years ago and one of my rather lengthy posts getting into detail of damage and cumulative effects.
It ends with my acknowledging that some will and that is up to you so please be safe.
My wife and I have been having anal sex about five times a week for 14 years, and also have had no ill effects. I am not discounting Brandye's experience, after all, she is a doctor. In speaking to two medical doctors (a urologist and a proctologist) and one a sex therapist, they were all of the opinion that, should there not be pain involved, there would be little chance of long lasting effects.
The proctologist I spoke to actually said he thought that slow, carefully, loving penetration could actually improve muscle control of the receptive person, as they learn to control their sphincter muscles. It's the hard, or painful penetration and stretching that causes damage. He said that, as a proctologist, he had seen people who, because of extreme play had received damage.
I can only speak from my personal experience when I say I believe anal sex can be safely practiced. Have you had any complications as a result of anal sex?

In my never to be so humble opinion, the two of you need a perspective on the various aspects of your love life. Anything done too much too often is bound to become boring, tiring, or just not worth doing after awhile. I suggest doing this activity as a bonus to be shared once in a while, instead of a regular menu item.

That would be exactly my opinion on it. Too much of anything usually isn't good. If you ate steak everyday, you'd get sick of it too.

Hmm... Hasn't happened here. I suppose we look at anal sex as most couples would vaginal. It's just the way we have sex. I don't think anyone would think vaginal sex every day was a bad thing.

I could eat steak forever! Okay fine, maybe I can't.
But this will be a post to remember for in the future.

Just out of curiosity, what is the basis of your assertion that there are "cumulative" effects?
People have been having anal sex for eons, and I have yet to see anything that legitimately documents any kind of cumulative effects from having anal sex. You'd think with as long as it has been around, there'd be more literature around that documents such a problem.
If you could point me to something that does provide such documentation, I'd be happy to entertain it. I don't want to be giving peopel bogus information, but I have been unable to find anyone (legitimate) that will state unequivolcally that anal will cause any long-term problems in the absence of some predicative condition (i.e., weak internal structures, etc.)
Caitlain,
Anal sex HAS been with us forever and was likely one of the earliest forms of birth control - however imperfect. It will be around forever and there is no way to stop it. We can only make it safer. Always use condoms and lots of lube and wash, wash, wash. Start small and a penis should not be the first thing to go in there.
www.soc.ucsb.edu/sexinfo/?article=faq&refid=125 - 24k is a diagram of what is happening as the penis enters. People loosen up and things go fine for years and even decades. The friction eventually will cause, or aggravate, hemorrhoids and when teh anal sphincters loosen up, bowel control will become a problem.
