In the world's western societies, a woman/girl is considered to be a virgin if she has yet to experience intercourse.
In some eastern societies and primitive cultures, the person has to undergo an inspection often by a village elder or male family member to see that the hymen is intact. If not, it used to be and still may be that if the hymen is found to be torn or non existent, she is ostracized, or, much worse.
It is recognized in the west that women are much more physically active and because any one of these activities may tear or erode her hymen, society as a whole is less stringent.
i would say intercourse is the end of your virginity, whether the hymen breaks or not.
