If your girlfriend has already agreed to it or has asked to be a slave (how hot is that!? ) then most of your work is done. You might want to talk with her about things she a) definitely wants to experience b) might like c) is not gung ho about, but would be willing to try and d) definitely does not want to do.
Sometimes it's more fun to not keep your slave naked all day. It can be fun to have her dress, sexily or sluttily, for the time of day and the activity. You might want her to perform a strip or belly dance for you. You might want a fashion show. There is so much kinky, dirty, naughty fun to be had using clothes. You could have her wear only an apron while cooking or doing housework. No matter how sadistic you might want to be a responsible "Master" does not want his slave unduly exposed to danger such as burns in the kitchen or spilling household detergents on her bare skin.
You might find that the leash at all times could get in your way. The collar can be worn 24 hours with no problem as long as it is one that won't abrase her skin. Use the same rule as with your dog, make sure you can fit a finger between the collar and her throat. You can take her out around town while wearing the collar and dressed provocatively. For a first timer the collar in public might seem a bit degrading or humiliating. Some D/s people will argue that there is a difference between degrading and humiliating, but I see no reason to split hairs. We are talking about something that is all fun between consenting adults. Don't over use your slave in any activity sexual or not. Be responsible! If she needs a rest let her rest. She will be more useful that way. Slaves get thirsty. Reward her when you are pleased. Make sure discipline/punishment fits the transgression. If you set some rules before play begins she might break them on purpose-slaves are like that, especially if a bit masochistic. Unless you are already well experienced with S&M or Discipline play don't get to fancy with corporal punishment your first time(s). Barehanded spanking, ping pong paddle, slippers are great. That is a good point Ephemera especially if the collar is either an inexpensive, poorly constructed leather dog collar with metal studs or a large and heavy metallic bondage collar.
On the other hand the better kink/sex shops sell "submissive" collars and "training" collars made of soft leather, velvet, or leather lined with velvet or some other soft material where there might be skin contact. While these collars have functional D rings or O rings to which a leash or chain can be attached they are made to be as comfortable as any fashion accessory. I know of full time "submissives" and "sex slaves" who wear a thick steel necklace/collar for days at a time with no chafing or rashes.
An option which I find aesthetically pleasing is for the slave to wear a gold or gold colored chain around her waist. Also ankle bracelets are a nice reminder although I think those are quite common among the "vanilla" folk now.

Playing slave requires that the slave be a good actor/actress who can really get into the role, but it requires that the master/mistress have a very creative mind.
For first time players a lot of time can be devoted to "training" the slave in the master's tastes so that the slave can eventually(hopefully) anticipate the master's needs and desires. New slaves also need to be trained in how to address the master, what tone of voice may be used, how to walk, talk, stand sit, what clothes to wear or not at any time of the day or night, how to serve a drink or meal. There are many seemingly nonsexual aspects of the slaves behavior that need to be addressed.
When the master desires a rest from direct interaction the slave can be given a household chore, an errand to run (with a time limit of course), can be sent to work on self improvement by doing something educational ( if master is interested in zoology send the slave to read up on social and sexual behavior of bonobos then come back and converse on the subject for example ), Or the slave can be an exact period of free time. A slave who appears improperly dressed or made up before a master can be sent to change and might be disciplined verbally or corporally.
basically the master doesn't have to do anything except make sure the slave is entertained---entertaining the master. And that is a big responsibility.
