It is possible to get a close shave, and it is possible to avoid irritation, but it is very difficult to do both at once. Shaving with the hair growth is less irritating, but shaving against the hair growth gets a cleaner shave. That is why I recomend noticing which areas tend to get irritated and shaving with the hair in those places, but against the hair in less irritable areas. Also, if this was your first time shaving, it may be more irritated than it will be after future shavings. I think skin sort of gets used to it after being shaved a few times. Sorry it didn't work out well this time.
