It's always been my understanding that abstaining for three days builds the biggest release (physically and mentally). For example, I remember going to volunteer for a contraceptive study, I was asked to refrain from masturbating for three days before the test.
As far as football goes, I think most coaches have a "Saturday night" rule - no sex with the wife the night before the game. (And I heard of one who had a "Wednesday night" rule.) Of course, that theory was refuted by Joe Namath, who picked up a girl the night before Super Bowl III, and went on the next day to beat the Colts.
