A loss of virginity used to be defined as not having an intact hymen as it was presumed that to break it meant the woman had to have had intercourse. This may have been the standard by which her status was determined generations ago when women were far less physically active. Nowadays, the hymen can erode away over the course of a young girls life by participating in sports or exercising heavily.

A man's status was taken at face value by his word. Nowadays, we also take a woman's word for being a virgin or not. However, having said that, in some Eastern cultures the old rules still apply and if her hymen was broken from normal activities and not from intercourse, it was presumed that she was not telling the truth and so would be shunned by both family and community for life. So much for unrealistic expectations and religious values.
