From what I get from it is this...wealth & power have a way of blinding us to what's really important, you tend to forget the people who were with you when you had nothing. Then, when death is at your door and your life is almost over, you see that all the possessions in the world won't make you happy. You just wish you could have someone, a friend or family member to be at your side to let you know at least someone will care when you're gone.
I don't know if that was the writer's intent, just my interpretation.
