Alright, I looked it up on wikipedia and now I'm going to answer my own question...
"In the latter part of the 20th century, some Americans and Europeans adopted the convention that when a man pierced just one of his ears, it symbolized his being gay(homosexual). In some circles, it was the left ear, while in others, the right. ... However, the convention tended to vary from one region to the next, and was not always followed. ... Since the early 1990s, it is widely accepted that the right ear piercing plays this role."
The things you can learn on the internet... I just found out about the "hanky code", too.
Anyway, maybe it doesn't mean anything in the gay community anymore, but I know it still has meaning to us straight guys.
