I'm in favor of the Derringer. This historical weapon is still being manufactured and is offered in several calibers.
It's benefits are that it can be carried in pocket or purse and is simple and straight forward in operation.
Oh, Yes--then there is the stun-gun. This is fine if you have come into contact with the bad guy, otherwise, see, above.
