I'm quite certain this is a cultural thing as opposed to a genetic thing. In North America, at least, we are trained to want it by the media, movies, our peers, etc. I see this even moreso in areas where US culture is exported, such as when I visit my parents' country.
Only the smart guys actually end up deconstructing it and realise that "typical masculine culture" is pointless, sick and self-defeating, so we revolt against it and such.
This is just like the debates about body image: A lot of people think women are genetically programmed to want to look thin with long legs and perky breasts. In reality, it's been exposed that this is just the media and culture that causes these beliefs, and in reality it's not an inherent desire of women.
