Alone Together

I ride the train with the white-haired woman. . . . Silver bag in hand . . .
Clutching it tightly she heads to town. . . . No reason . . .
No one there to see. . . . . Just biding time till the end of the line.
I ride the train with the man dressed in plaid. . . .
Eyes shut tightly behind polished glass. . . . Ever half asleep . . .
It's the same every day. . . . He punches in. . . .
He takes the trip. . . . But he never enjoys the ride.
I ride the train with the woman and child. . . .
She cradles her baby with love. . . . With sadness . . .
No one ever travels alongside them. . . . No one ever will . . .
They are two pieces of a puzzle that will never be complete.
I ride the train with a man and his briefcase. . . . Forever in a hurry . . .
Foot tapping impatiently . . . Late, late, late, it screams. . . .
Where he's going he doesn't know. . . . He just needs to get there fast.
I ride the train with myself. . . . Never looking around . . .
Never making a sound . . . No one speaks. . . .
We all just ride. . . . Around and around . . .
All together . . . But by ourselves.
