Site genesis? (A brief history of this venue)

just curious who started this site and forum? it has been around for quite some time, 10 years or more. are there any members still here that have been here since the beginning? Brandye seems to be the longest contributing member here.

Hi - Steve here...

It is great to see such interest in (and feedback about) the site. Thanks for the very kind comments.

The reason I got involved was that I could see the need for a safe and non-judgmental environment that promoted open and free discussion of sexual issues - for folks of all ages, sexes and inclinations. Such a service did not seem to be provided anywhere else.

In the early days, it was Tom's passion and commitment for creating such a needed quality website that convinced me this was a worthwhile project to help out with. The project then also took hold of me - and the rest is (as they say) history; here we are, almost 10 years later! Oh, I believe that will call for a drink - or two - to celebrate! :)

By the way, the stats in the 'media kit' posted are just a tad out of date ... we now serve almost 13 million pages of content to 1.5 million readers per month!

As has already been mentioned, the ongoing maintenance and development of the site requires a lot of hard work. I would therefore like to add my thanks for the long-term members and the (formal & informal) role they have played in helping get us here.

Here's to the next 10 years!

the site was probably made by or for the mod's or at least that would be my best guess

Did some digging long time ago, but still can't really answer your question, Big ;)

Maybe they should add an "ABOUT US" at the homepage! :)

By their disclaimer, the domain of sexinfo101 is owned by the KuMo Web Communications Corporation and exists since 2001.
The President and COO of KuMo is Tom Kulmacz | LinkedIn. The site is hosted from Canada, Montreal (if W3SPY is correct ;))

I also found this bit in a pdf meant for advertisers:
What is SexInfo101.com?
Sexinfo101.com is an online sex information destination, with over 700 thousand monthly readers who have access to a vast library of free information in the form of varied articles, polls and a message board.

It is THE top non-pornographic "one-stop spot" for sex tips and positions, dating advice, sexuality, birth control and sexual health information! Sexinfo101.com has effectively become the ultimate source of information on sexual issues on the Internet.

The key to Sexinfo101.com’s success has always been the focus on its readers. Sexinfo101.com has been able to develop considerable goodwill and trust with its readership by providing interesting, informative and explicit (yet tasteful) articles that touch on issues that matter most to sexually active (young and mature) adults of today.

Sexinfo101.com aims to provide sexual content that is useful, practical and entertaining, not crude or vulgar; our ‘acid test’ is that a parent and their mature teen should be able to view our website in each others’ company without undue embarrassment. This frank, yet tasteful, approach is the driving force behind delivering the highest quality and most interesting sex information material on the internet, and what most distinguishes Sexinfo101.com from all its competitors, as illustrated in the Reader’s Testimonials section.

Company History
Sexinfo101.com was formed in 2001, with its first focus on creating simple, helpful and straightforward articles. As the company grew, so did the scope of its content. Today, Sexinfo101.com boasts 5 sections containing over 120 articles, plus state-of-the-art 3D renderings (with explanations) of Sex Positions, highly informative opinion polls/ demographics, and a super-busy forum boasting over 12.5 thousand members (plus many more visitors), and more than 85 thousand posts on over 10 thousand threads!!

As its audience grew, Sexinfo101.com attracted the attention of other media such as Playboy and Cos- mopolitan (amongst many others) who began to feature Sexinfo101.com’s content. Sexinfo101.com continues to expand into new initiatives to broaden its reach and appeal across an international audi- ence. Additional new features and writers are added constantly in response to our viewer’s requests.

Sexinfo101.com also attracts interest from the health sector, General Practitioners and Public Health Practitioners - seeking guidance for and on behalf of young adults in search of practical advice in sexual health and exploring the complexities of relationships.

Sexinfo101.com continues to be one of the most important, strategic destinations on the Web for advertisers aiming to reach the lucrative (non-pornographic) adult-material oriented market.
Well, that's all I could find... Does someone know the answer to this mystery?

the domain was originally registered in January 2001

on an up note, the domain is registered thru 2020, so hopefully it will be around for many more years

Hey,

Tom here, what would you like to know?

well if this is tom kulmacz i was just curious who started this site. it seems the research above answered that. it just seemed that this site existed without any participation from an admin, and the mods don't really participate in the forum except clean it up. is the company that is in control of the site a non profit organization for sex education?

Tom, was there a specific inspiration or experience to create this site?
Something that made you think one day: this is what I want to do!

The main inspiration behind the site was essentially that there wasn't a good site available to me when i was going through my late teens...

Having dabbled a little with making websites in the 2 years leading up to it, and I mean a little, I thought I would start it as a project to get a handle on web development... I started the project in the summer of 2000, and by the start of the new year, with the help of two classmates, was ready to launch the first version of the site... (there have been about 5 over the years). Having just paid for a new semester of school and books, I only had about $20 to my name... so I pawned off the new text books a week into the semester, and used the money to pay for hosting and the domain name.

We continued to work on the site as a side project, until the site's popularity started taking off... not enough to earn money, but enough to generate some significant hosting bills... The two friends were fearful of the debt it could create, so they chose to depart...

After a panic conversion of the site to reduce costs, I formally took on a friend's father as a partner. He had been very generous with his time up to that point, consulting us on so many things where we had no experience... never asking for anything in return. Its mainly been the two of us behind most of the work since... (though we've been helped by so many people along the way... Brandye and DancingDoc to name just a couple...)

The site has become everything it is from the original investment of ~$200... which is why you may notice things don't move as quickly as we would like... we would prefer to be updating way more often, fixing all the bugs, and making things better... but with tight financial and chronological restrictions, there is only so much we can do.

That said, we have been pushing hard in a couple directions that should provide us the resources we need to start accelerating the momentum... so that should be starting to change in the near future!

it's nice to see that the creator actually checks the forum

.... and Steve and Tom (and modIII, who is not publicly known but a good guy) have done a magnificent job. There have been many similar sites come and go before and during the last eleven years. So many have been overrun by teen boys to do their bragging; others by trolls pushing specific agenda; others full of adverts; and, some, simply ignored. We users see very little of the constant attention the mods quietly play in keeping the place cleaned up; we all have a responsibility to push the trolls out. There have been a few quality contributors at any time over the years, some have moved on and some still here, and I believe they make a "content" difference but have not nearly the effect of the good mods.

I proudly point out that I was even suspended briefly for calling a jerk a jerk when he was being a jerk! The jerk went on to bombing other sites. When the site has changed host servers, the help I have been given in adjusting my non-standard access has been wonderful. We are dealing with good guys running a good site, else I would be long gone.

Thank you, Tom, for sharing that piece of history.
This site is special and I'm happy to have one day found it! :) Many thanks for bringing it into existence! And for keeping it so :)
