History in the making on Saturday???

It is dully noted that opinions vary far and wide in reference to
horse racing but regardless a run at history Saturday should be
exciting. What a magnificent horse. For those of us that truly
love these beautiful animals. Ever get the feeling you really "need"
to be somewhere on a given day.:):)

Okay what is Saturday?

Not funny.............Surely you jest??
You have got to be joking. Hasn't transpired in almost 30 years.........
you know now?? Quit joking around.

Okay, pardon my ignorance. I live in an equestrian area; however, my interactions with horses is limited to saving the abused, beaten, starved, & neglected ones.

I enjoy seeing the others on the farms but I wish I was just prodding you. No, I don't know. :(:o

Ok first and foremost.....WHY WOULD ANYONE ABUSE AND/OR NEGLECT
ANY ANIMAL???????? Ridiculous. Third leg of the "Triple Crown" the Belmont
Stakes. One horse, Big Brown, has won the first two legs of the triple crown
and will run for the third this weekend. Belmont Park in New York State (that is
in the upper NE of the Continential US). Not terribly far from New York City.
Ok, there I got it off my chest.................

Hope he wins it. Secretariat's still my all-time favorite, though.

Oh, now I understand. So are you going? Yes, I know NYS...live here & some of the largest stud farms are in my community!

Horses are one of the largest abused animals...why? I don't understand it, I just care for them & follow through.

Now I understand you & I recall them discussing Big Brown--gorgeous.

Da'tara ran a great race today.

Sort of the understatement of the year.............still very confusing.
Probably only "horsepeople" understand.

Not a great outcome...

I intended for Big Brown and his potential for triple status...he was/appeared from a non-horse racers view a bit "goofy" Saturday. He seemed not to want to make the 30 year chance status! I know one horse wins! LOL! I was hoping he made history!

39-1 horse wins, go figure.

Oppps...accidentally edited my own post to your reponse! Sorry!

Well, Da'Tara was bred for distance. Big Brown, being off his steroids and trained by a particularly nasty specimen of humanity (what ESPN or whatever didn't say was that while his wife was a crack addict, so was he--and he is not a nice man) and in that heat and being boxed in, did not run a good race. He did not look like himself coming out of the barns--no racehorse is that calm heading into the gates. I hope he's back on form soon.

JustA (just a what---that is a question for another day). I think you are
really right. I have another few opinions on the situation as well. JustA
you seem to understand a bit about horses. You are also right about the
calmness. Not much different when we use to play and there we days that
the game seemed to go our way and other days no matter how well we
played it was like we couldn't get over the hump. Different sport than
horse racing but the premise is the same. Good Post Just.

Had to be a tough one for B. Brown. The heat hit a all time high here with humidity. The trainer? Little to be said for him & the wife; feel bad for the horse...do you believe he was sedated due to coming off the steriods?

I'm not sure. Not being connected to that particular group in any way I don't know what he was on or not on, and what the withdrawal periods were. I would chalk it up to a horse that was depressed because of the heat and just not on form. In addition the Belmont is a long race and needs a distance horse. He may just not be one of them.

Luckily, though his trainer is an idiot and not worthy of the title horseman, Michael Iavarone, the owner, is a good guy. Kent Desormeaux I don't know much about but he seems to have made a good decision. Three Chimneys owns the breeding rights so they'll treat him right there.

Well, I've ridden hunters/jumpers/equitation since I was three and a half and breezed timber and flat horses--I hope I understand a bit. :D

We are now more on the owner's side of the ledger these days. Not a
competitive thing more an enjoyment pursuit. Very familiar with especially the
hunter jumper side of things. Like most things, it boils down to dollars and
cents and in this case a lot of dollars.

You can say that again--do you know a ballpark of what Three C's paid for the breeding rights? I was hearing 50 mil but it was a loud, crowded room and I may have misunderstood. Whatever it was, it was a lot. Big time business. I wish that money would have gone into rescues and fattening starving horses rather than businessmen's wallets.

Thanks for your insight Justine & CL:

I see it from a different light (anti-cruelty through beating, starvation, neglect, etc.); however, realize there are large finances involved & some are less then ethical in financial dealings since they are viewed as a commodity such as trading on wall street. What is done for race & the outcomes, is foreign to me.

If I had my way, I would have a horse & animal sanctuary on my property!

I had actually heard that it was a little "north" of that 50 mark your referred
too. Like I previously stated, "a lot of dollars and cents." If you really think
about it though, most competitive pursuits associated with horses are expensive
by most people's scale. To someone who has paid and currently does pay for
these pursuits it really isn't that much compared to the enjoyment they bring.
Oh, some businessmen aren't that bad.

Or business people per say. LOL

I guess the opposite side I see of it is where I am is many equestrian stud farms. The "Worth" placed on a stud horse or a colt and what people will do at times shocks me. Yes, there are equally nice & decent people as well. I just see them as gorgeous loving animals & not as prize. Whereas many disagree with that view.

The one aspect I do not like is when they are raced they are too high strung.
