I'm quite certain this is a cultural thing as opposed to a genetic thing. In North America, at least, we are trained to want it by the media, movies, our peers, etc. I see this even moreso in areas where US culture is exported, such as when I visit my parents' country.

I don't know why guys feel compelled to lie in an anonymous survey (denial?), but it's been shown that on *average*, they'll add at least an inch to the truth even in that situation. So, you can absolutely depend on every web poll to be undependable.
Fortunately, there have been a number of scientifically conducted medical studies in recent years that show the true average erect length to be between 5.1" and 5.4", with the majority of men falling within a one inch range roughly centered on the average. Also, the percentage of those with 9 inches and above isn't even a double digit. The average girth is around 4.75" to 5", and most men are pretty close to that, too.
Hard to believe? Of course it is. Men *LIE*. Even those who have 8 inches will add one more, and the ones who would need to add 2 or 3 inches just to be "respectable" generally say nothing instead. It's a rare man who will admit to having "only" five inches (or less), but as a faggot who's personally inspected more penises than I care to say, I will say that before the zipper comes down, I'm expecting about 5.5", give or take a half inch, and I'm usually right. Of course, I don't see nearly as many under that range as above it, but those guys tend to sit at home rather than having to bare the "shame" of revealing their "sexual inadequacy".
I guess I should say that altho I'm in the group slightly above the average range (OK, it's 7x4.75), I have a fetish for little dicks, and a preferrence for average or smaller. Besides the fact that they get harder, longer, they fit in my mouth much better.

I found a site some time ago that had a large scale (more then 3k people) internet survey, and this is roughly what they found:
Length, ave 5.5, ave variance (most of the non-5.5's fall within:) 1.5 inches (so 4-7 inches)
Girth, ave 5.1, ave variance .6
This data is from an internet poll, like i said, so some of it is going to be funkyness, though the variance numbers help combat that.
The girth is the part that usually screws me up, i see 5 inches and think huge, but thats really only like 1.7 through the middle.
I personaly am on the long side, and way over the normal variance on girth, which causes way more problems then it's worth (which isn't that much, really, from people i've talked to, averidge really is best).

Okay first of all penis size when erect fluctuates depending on how arroused you are and on my best days I'm about 7" long and 4.5 in girth and in response to andyaz post I respectfully disagree with you that people are always lying about their penis length I agree that some people will lie even on the internet where they are anonymous just to make themselves feel better but not enough to seriously contaminate and well organized survey.
Second of all I have always felt inadequate about my penis size and I think the real issue is that almost everyone has at one time or another felt inadequate about their penis size and the truth is if you have a 8 inch penis you wont have to work as hard as a guy with a 3 inch penis but it doesnt mean you dont have to work to please a woman a penis is just like life it is what you make of it.

The standard deviation (for those non-statisticians) is the measure of how widely values are dispersed from the average value.
It's interesting that although male and female preferred size is identical, it is in fact women who have shown the widest range of preferences! The Std Dev for females is much greater than for males! I (for one) would have expected it to be the other way around.
All the men (bar 1) voted from 5" to 7".
5 women voted in the average range, while 2 voted 8" to 9", 1 voted 7" to 8", and 1 voted 4" to 5".
Does this mean we need to revise the often-cited belief that ... "the vast majority of women don't care about size, just quality?"

OK, Stallion, I've never had one too large or too small. I like them in that middle range around six inches. Of more interest to me is that they not be bar rigid. That limits my motions and I cannot adjust to the best spot.

I'm one of the females that voted the 8"-9" range. Personally I do have experience in the different sizes. I've been with a 4.5, a 6, an 8 and a 9. Three of which were quite a bit above average in the girth area as well. Brand me a size-queen, but yep the 8 and 9 were more fun. Sure it hurts like crazy unless you use a lot of lube and patience, but there's something to be said for the endorphin rush that accompanies that kind of stretching.

I'm quite certain this is a cultural thing as opposed to a genetic thing. In North America, at least, we are trained to want it by the media, movies, our peers, etc. I see this even moreso in areas where US culture is exported, such as when I visit my parents' country.
Only the smart guys actually end up deconstructing it and realise that "typical masculine culture" is pointless, sick and self-defeating, so we revolt against it and such.

I really think it has to do with who you are partnered with. I have been with only 2 men. The first was quite large. The man I'm with now is noticeably smaller, both in length and width.

That's a loaded question.....no pun intended! I think every woman is different, and you'll find many different answers from many different women. Variety is the spice of life!
However, I do agree....a large penis is not going to necessarily guarantee me good sexual intercourse.....that depends on the guy. So, I must agree with the saying, "It's not what you've got, it's how you use it."
