So so, what kind of music does everyone like? Are there any particular bands or artists that are your faves? Any that you hate? Any fave songs in particular?
I know this type of topic has been posted before, but they were a while ago, so I figured I'd bring this back up considering there are new members and some people's tastes may have changed... ![]()
I really love music. One of my all time fave bands is Nirvana. Ive got like 8 cd's of them! I also like Evanescence, Slipknot, Dropkick Murphys, From Autumn to Ashes, Bright Eyes, Staind, Brand New, and lots more...
So how about everyone else? ![]()

I'm pretty open to all different types of music and find myself listening to a wide variety. Recently my boyfriend has introduced me into the world of techno.
My fave bands are Green day and Biffy Clyro...seriously any of you ever get the chance you should listen to Biffy coz they're amazing! if ur downloading then Glitter and Trauma, 57, Justboy, Joy Discovery Invention, All the Way Down, Questions and Answers...ok ill stop coz i could go on forever
I usually download some songs from each album a band has out to see if I like them. Then if I do, I go out and buy an album or two when I get the money, then delete the downloaded tracks.
Thanks a bunch
okay monie, those bands i suggested earlier would be fine then. and i'll suggest some more if you want a little later. how do you get your music?
Well I like a lot of music, I'm open to listening to just about anything to determine if I like it. I cant sit there and say that I dont like a song because of the genre its in.
So my point is that I really cant specify what kind of metal I like, seeing as I dont pay much attention to genres. On the previous page I listed a bunch of bands that I like, but here are some of them again:
Lacuna Coil
Children of Bodom
Evanescence
Atreyu (sp?)
Shadows Fall
In Flames
Iced Earth
There's more but I can't think right now, haha. Anyways, I'm really interested in listening to more, so really, anything would be cool
I'm also interested in hearing some of that overseas metal you're talking about.
hmm... i feel kinda odd about posting three times in a row, but i just saw something that caught my eye. hope ya'll don't mind...
Is mallet percussion used in heavy metal?
there's different types of metal, and most of them have a different way of going about things. for instance: (note: this is all to my understanding, so it might be a bit off)
but heavy metal - when i think of this, i think of american/mainstream bands, like slayer, pantera, hatebreed hmm... those kinds of bands. lol mostly just guitars and drums.
then you have death metal - this is a bit heavier. i think of stuff like carcass and deicide. it's heavier and they're more about the "in your face" metal, the crazy riffs and what not. also, mostly guitars and drums.
black metal is my favorite
- to me, it's more melodic. they use more than just guitars and drums, and to me, are more-so musicians, if that makes sense. this is where you'll find different instruments, like keyboards, and orchestras and what not.
doom metal - from what i've heard, they're more electronic, less of the drums and guitars and more of the electronic keyboard and such.
those are the ones i know alright, there's quite a few more, like thrash metal is like death, but heavier i believe, then there's also nu-metal, goth, grind core, prog and a lot more. lol hope i didn't bore anyone with this post, just thought i'd share a bit.

my favorite is graveworm, but i also like axis of perdition, myrk, aborym, thee maldoror kollective, manes, xasthur, bloodthron, graveland, catamenia and void of silence. i have more, but i thought that was enough names.

seems napster hasn't collected any serious metal.
Rats! I'd like to hear it.
yeah, i don't go to napster. if you want, i can suggest some places you can get some or i can try and email some to you if possible. just lemme know.
and as for the mallet percussion in heavy metal. i'm not sure, i know a lot of black metal bands use electronic keyboards. i think there may have been a couple bands that had like a marimba or something in them, but it's not too common.
Hey Kythulhu, are you saying you play mallet percussion? Thats pretty cool. I use it via samples/midi on my music sometimes. It can be so atmospheric.
yeah, i play mallet percussion. out of all the instruments i've played, it's definitely my favorite. maybe i'm a bit biased, lol, but i think it's the most diverse instrument. except for strings. but you can easily get different tones and sounds out of a keyboard. and a slight change in tone can change the emotion. ohh man, i love it. okay, i'm gonna stop being a band nerd now.
I'll check out the file size (it's on my rather sick win98 computer), but its likely to be 5megish. How big can you manage?
I know some email clients don't like files over 1meg, Also i am not sure how Outlook copes.
I may be able to locate some webspace so you can download it directly if thats easier.

You will have to decide if comparing yourself to him is bad or not. I'll have to hear the song and read the bio.
Can you email me the song, Alspals? I would love to hear it. I might be able to put it up on my fledgling website if I can ever get around to finding the time to work on the site. How big is the file?
Kythulhu, I love mallet percussion especially in the classical music. Carnival of Animals is fun.
Is mallet percussion used in heavy metal?
So who else out there plays an instrument?
I'd dance with you anytime Finewine.... but I think you know that.
I forgot Napster charged these days. Maybe i should subscribe.... i stopped using file sharing when I had that good fortune last year (ie i can't claim sufficient poverty to nick music anymore!).
I must be losing track of the music scene, so many bands mentioned that i don't recognise.
If i knew how to get it on the net, i'd post one of my songs. I have one that is pretty heavy. Having said that the record company didn't like that one, said it reminded them of Jah Wobble (is that bad?). Anyway, i don't care, it was just a vehicle so I could practice a twin guitar solo.

I musy have been thinking too much about your bedtime routine! It's actually called "Are you Gonna Go my Way" as is the album.
The album "Mama Said" is just so nice. Oh and the track "Fly Away".
I will have to buy up the rest of his albums so i can hear "Lady".
I use Napster. millions of tracks at my fingertips. It's worth the subscription to me. I like feeding the musicians. The world would be a sad place without music.
Yeah, My Mama Said. "Always on the Run"... makes you want to move and sway the body and hips to that beat and move the hands all over the body. Want to dance with me?
Hehe well I'll look into those cause metal rules and I'm always lookin for more...
What are some of those metal bands you like Kythulhu?

music has been a big part of my life. it's helped me through many different situations though life and high school.
one of my passions is playing is. my favorite is mallet percussion (things like the xylophone, vibraphone, marimba, etc.) there's so much that can be expressed though music, how many different emotions and messages. simply amazing.
as for music i like to listen to, i'm a big time metalhead. black metal is my favorite. nothing american though, it's all weak compared to the music over seas. i do like other things though, classic rock, classical, rock, some jazz and then some others that i don't know what to classify them as. lol
Finewine,

In fact, looking at the songs you mention, i need to start saving as I don't know many of them.
I love listening to other peoples music, but particularly when they are with me. I can really get hooked on their enthusiasm. Only trouble is, i have bought a few albums that i don't actually like when i listen to them on m own, lol.
I like his song "Lady"
Which album is "you gotta go your own way" on?

I was actually wondering what album that compilation is, cause I'm interested in getting it.
I want to say the name of that album is "Nirvana". Was the compilation released in 2002? "Nirvana" has a compilation of different songs on it.
I like Motley Crue "If I Die Tomorrow" "Without You" and "Kickstart My Heart"
then there's "Gravity" by Shawn McDonald
and "Imagine Me Without You" and "Everytime I Fall" by Jaci Velasquez
"On Fire" by Switchfoot
I love just about any style of music depending on the mood I am in and what I am currently experiencing in relationships and what the music evokes in my memory.
Oh, i forgot to mention Lenny Kravitz... I just love his stuff whether it be slow and soulful or rockin' like "You gotta go your own way".
sooooo nice
in utero i think. it's the one with the naked baby on the cover
Yup i did... you caught me bing lazy!
When my car gets back from repairs i'll tell you the album title.
Not trying to be an ass or anything but it's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana. You probably knew that, right?
What cd is that?
Music can be so evocative.
Stuff like Tupelo Honey (Van Morrison) or Four Seasons In One Day (Crowded House) can draw you into another world. Great mood music.
I recently got a rock classics album with stuff on it like Alright Now (free), Layla (Clapton), Teen Spirit (Nirvana) and More than a Feeling (Boston) on. There are the tunes that I cut my teeth on when i first learned guitar and they still make my heart pump even now when i hear them.
From the alrenative scene how about Higher Ground (Chillies) or Orange Crush & Losing My Religion (REM).
I am not so into Jazz, but check out Avante Guard (Don Cherry & John Coltrane). If you've never been to see live jazz (folk too), its worth a try... great atmosphere.
Nice view Finewine. Music really is a beautiful and kick ass thing at the same time.
It'll be a while though.
And unfortunately I cant think of any good bass lines right now..
Can't wait till I finally can get a guitar
I like music that moves the soul and touches my heart strings whereever I'm at in the moment. It can be any music. I love classical because of the beauty of its discipline, structure and emotions in the mind it creates. But I get off on rock, rb, contemporary, blues, give me the blues, and anything else that meets me where I'm at at the time. Music is awesome and powerful to the mind and heart. I love solid rhythmic bass and drum lines that grab my heart and make my body move. I love to move my body to music.
Know any songs with some good rhythmic bass lines?
Never really took the time to listen to Rammstein... oh well
I'm really feeling this heavy metal.Bands like mudvayne, rammstein, agnostic front, etc.Rock is sooo cool!!!!
Rammstein's cool, but they're even better if you can understand the lyrics, and understand them enough to interpret what they mean, because they have some deep messages in some of their music
For some reason you dont sound serious...
Well in any event those bands do kick ass.
o yea I forgot about Slayer.Totally awesome!!!
Ok. Growing up I was heavily into rap music, but thats when rap was about being rebellious and no one was conforming.Nowadays, you got everybody making the same song again and again. So now I'm still into rap(mos def,the roots, talib kweli, the more conscience rappers)but I also find my self digging alternative music.I just got into listening to some Pantera(Gold!!!!!!!!) I'm really feeling this heavy metal.Bands like mudvayne, rammstein, agnostic front, etc.Rock is sooo cool!!!!

-mariah
Ok I'm coming back to add some more:
Shadows Fall
My Chemical Romance
Lacuna Coil
CHILDREN OF BODOM!!!
Alkaline Trio
Artreyu
As I Lay Dying
No particular order there
I got a $20 gift certificate to FYE for christmas and I have yet to decide what cd I'm getting.
I'm leaning towards getting Children of Bodom's "Follow the Reaper" or "Hate Crew Deathroll". If anyone knows who I'm talking about here... HELP! lol
ya tease i like the eminem show better.
I dont really like it either. Neither do most of the people I know.
Dont worry, I do that burned cd thing too.
Although I dont have a burner, it just stays here on my comp.
I think I'm the only Em fan that doesn't like his Encore cd. lol.
I love Mosh (and I love the video for it) and I like Just Lose It.. but the cd just doesn't do much for me.
But Green Day's cd is awesome.
I really need to get it.. I only have a burned copy right now. (yea yea, I know, bad me. lol)
i have american idiot!!!
a new cd that i also bought is a cd called 'encore' by eminem, if u r into rap or hip hop...that is an awesome cd.
Ok, I know I'll probably get attacked for this...
I'm not a fan of rap or R&B. However, I do listen to Eminem when he's on. I think he's funny, I like his sense of humor about things.
And no, I dont have Green Day's cd. Maybe I'll check it out though.
Green Day "American Idiot" is a must buy album, if you haven't got that album yet, put it on your Christmas wishlist now.
True True, Ive had a crush on Dave Grohl since Nirvana lol. I sound like a teenager, lol.
There are lots of bands I like but can't think of at the moment. My b/f gets me into a lot of bands I would have never heard of otherwise or he knows about them months before everyone else. He buys soooo many cds, its crazy. They are taking over our house. Thousands I would say, lol.
o yes he is very talented...i love both of those bands and he was/is excellent in both of them. he has a really good voice. so does chris cornell from audioslave and soundgarden.
Hehehe. Yeah, he is pretty hot. I like Green Day from time to time... i dont know, im weird.
At the moment Im sitting here thinking about how talented Dave Grohl really is. He kicked ass on drums and backup solo in Nirvana, and he kicks ass on vocals and guitar in Foo Fighters. He really is pretty damn good. (I am certain I havent, but if i've SOMEHOW gotten my facts screwed up on those positions of his, let me know).
I do have a wide taste though. Just not a lot of exposure or resources to encompass it all.
ah yes greenday rocks. and yes i agree demon billie joel is one sexy biotch.
Well Green Day is awesome! Ive always had a crush on Billie Joe lol.

I also like a lot of alternative and Nirvana was one of my fav bands. Another is 311. I like classic rock, alternative, and now I listen to alot of punk. Some of my favs are NOFX, Rancid, Offspring, AFI, and the list goes on and on.
The Dropkick Murphys are good and I also like a lot of new metalcore stuff like Eighteen Visions and From autumn to ashes as well. Monie you like some good stuff, lol.
I'll just sit here in the other side of the world for music.
I listen to just about anything...except hard rap and opera and most country makes me want to cringe.
But I'll refrain from talking about favorite artists...not because I'm ashamed, but because I don't feel like I need to be laughed at, made fun of, criticized, called names, etc etc, for the stuff I choose to like. I also don't need to hear the same ass crap I hear all the time about how whoever sucks and how whoever is so much better.

Just so you know, I dont do that and had no intention of doing so. I just wanted to talk about the ones we each like. But I know what you mean, and I dont blame you for choosing not to respond.
Oh, I wasn't calling you out or accusing you or anything.
There's just always SOMEONE out there who does it and it's just well, beyond annoying.
If you choose to not like the music I do, that's your option. But I don't need to hear your (a you in general) crap about how you think they suck and why you don't like them and blah blah blah and what names you can come up with for me as a music fan while you bash those artists.
But anyways... to go with the norm trend of this thread, I will say that Green Day is one of my favorite artists and has been for quite a while.
